Thanked: 0Hello from Vermont
Hi everyone. I'm new to straight razoring (in fact, haven't tried doing it yet). Inherited my great grandfather's straight razor-he was a barber-while going through my now deceased Grandmother's items in Feb '09. Thought it might be interesting to give it a try. Started reading up on this a couple of weeks ago and am now in pursuit of a whetstone and strop. I can sharpen a blade, given enough info, but I think I may look up a sharpening service to get GGpa's straight razor shave ready--fortunately, it has no nicks and is hollow ground. Will probably post a pic before too long, as I'm willing to bet there are people here who dig antiques, etc--rest assured, it's no super valuable treasure, he was working class after all. Look forward to chatting/getherin info from everyone

I inherited a couple razors from my great granddad and although they too are pedestrian, I wouldn't trade them for the world.

I would suggest that you get granpas razor honed by a pro, check the classifieds, you can always practice honing on something else.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Big +1.
I remember reading a post recently about a man who almost had his razor destroyed by some hack job. His wasn't an expensive model either, but the family connection made it individually priceless. Fortunately the man's second choice was far superior when he sent it to a honemeister, not just some guy who sharpens stuff.
Check the classifieds here and remove all doubt in the quality of your selection. These people are the real deal.

Thanked: 0Thanks everyone for the good advice. I intend to have a pro hone that razor, and probably someone from here, as I have a great impression of this place being the real deal.
