    Default Sawasdeekrub from Thailand.

Hey, I'm new to SRP. Just found it today thanks to a great article I found on the art of straight razor shaving.

    Quote..

"Here I have to insert a plug for the best straight razor resource on the web, which is a Yahoo! group called Straightrazorplace. The first thing you should do after reading this is to go and join this group, and don’t be afraid to ask questions as beginners are welcome. The group was founded by a gentleman named Lynn Abrams, who has done more than anyone to bring back the straight razor way of shaving...... All in all, even if you never meet another straight razor user in person, you will be part of an online community that has some really nice people in it."

Am I allowed to post a link to this article??

I'm a hairdresser by trade, have been doing it for about 14 years. I'm living in Thailand at the moment, and have been offered a contract by a 5 star resort. There isn't, and doubt there will be, many takers on the haircutting. The management thinks that straight razor shaving would be a hit, and so do I.
As an apprentice, part of my training involved straight razor shaving, but beyond watching a video and shaving a few balloons, we only really just scratched the surface.

I want to learn how to do shaves, and to provide a great service. I know it's going to take practice, and this is the beginning of my research.

I haven't browsed the threads yet because I thought I'd introduce myself first. I won't ask any questions yet, except to say that if anyone can point me in the direction of any particularly good threads for learning the art of performing shaves, things I should really know, tutorials I should check out, etc, I would really appreciate that. At a glance it looks like there is a lot of information out there.

    Thanks!
    Aaron.

    G'day & welcome to SRP.
Why not post a link to your article. Sounds pretty +ve for SRP. I'm sure the mods would be gentle with you if it needed to be removed, first post & all

There are a few barber members here. jpm7676 comes to mind. Maybe some others will chime in.

Enjoy your research & good luck with the venture.

    Default G'day mate...

    Thankyou!

OK well here is the link, this could be a re-post for this site as Christopher Moss, who wrote this article, does mention that he is a member of SRP.

Not sure if this is the right spot to post this sort of thing, but I thought it was a good introduction to the art of straight razor shaving, and it gave me the heads up on Straight Razor Place.

I know each country has it's own rules and health regulations, but is anyone out there using straight razors to perform shaves for customers or do you have to go with the Feather style, replaceable blade razors?

I see lots of info on straight razor care, honing, stropping etc, but would it be fair to assume that this is all for personal use, and not for shaving customers? The resort that I will be working at is an Eco style / environmentally friendly spa, and it would be great to market the service as one with little to no waste compared to using disposable safety razors and aerosol shaving foams...

If you can use non-disposable straight razors, what kind of a sterilisation process would you have to go through to ensure that that the razor is safe and hygenic to use on the next customer? Actually, as I type this I am guessing that it is highly unlikely that you can do this anymore....

Well thanks for the reply, time to start exploring the forums, and search out the barber you suggested...

    Cheers.

You will need to check on that country's health laws.
In Australia 99.9% of barbers use disposable straights if they use them at all.

I'm thinking something like the traditonal Japanese Kamisori razor with no scales would be the easiest to sterilise as there are no plastic scales but most sterilisation methods take time so you may need several razors for a days work

It would be interesting to know what happened to the op as hairdressing is a protected trade here in Thailand: that means no foreigner can work as a hairdresser . He would have to be careful.
My girl is a hairdresser and uses a straight for shaving necks etc. she breaks a DE in half and uses that. A new blade for each customer although I know many other who do not change blades
