Thanked: 2I hope so, where do you think I'd find the razor that would give me the best bang for my buck? Generic websites, amazon, eBay? I am hearing more and more that dovo is the "gold standard" but even the cheapest ones are 70ish

Thanked: 2Awesome, thanks Larry - I was debating between a shave ready razor and going with something else, but since it is possible to hone it here, do you think I'd be okay getting one that's not shave ready?

You are best off buying here, from the classifieds on SRP. There are plenty of great deals "out there." But, there are plenty of gotchas too. Especially, when starting, especially when you don't know a good shaving edge from disaster, play it safe.
Even buying a new Dovo, if you don't get it from the right place, does not guarantee a shave ready edge.

I offered to help you, since we both live in the same area. If you buy a non-shave ready razor you can mail it to me, of course. Or, we can meet somewhere and I will hone it for you for free. A get-you-started push in the right direction. However you want to handle it, can in all likelihood be worked out.

I'm in north dallas (near Plano) and can show you how to hone a razor and help you do it if need be.
also, I can take a look at the strop. sometimes it can be fixed.
