    Default Hello from the Ozarks

After lurking for a while, I want to say thanks to the many who contribute to this (and probably several other shaving forums). What a great group of helpful and civilized members.

I started wet shaving a month or so ago, and am amazed what a difference proper technique and preparation can make. I've dreaded shaving each day for years, suffering through razor burns and bumps aggravated by dress shirts and ties.

I now greatly enjoy the experience with a DE and have decided to plunge into straights. I've ordered a couple of nice razors and am thinking that it would be wise to get a "beater" to practice honing and stropping. The idea is to not ruin an expensive razor, nor would I use the practice razor to actually shave. Any thoughts, suggestions?

    Welcome!

It sounds like you have done your homework, which is great..! That will really help you on your way.

Could I please ask what razors you have ordered? If you are looking for a razor to practice honing with I would say get a razor from the classifieds here and ask the seller to send it unhoned. eBay is such a minefield and its really easy to end up with something thats no good.

You do want to be able to shave with the practice razor though, that way you will know you are honing correctly and can put a smooth and sharp edge on. If you get a piece of junk it will either not take an edge or be such a nightmare to hone that it'll make the learning experience almost impossible.

Ok, you'll get a feel for moving the razor on the hone, but thats about it. You wont have any more knowledge about how to actually get a razor sharp.

If you get a good razor from the classifieds you'll be able to put an edge on it, shave with it and know that it was you that put the edge on.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks, Stubear. I ordered a Dovo 5/8 Desert Ironwood stainless with the premuim IV 3" strop from SRD and this Robert Williams from John Crowley:

I will follow your recommendation re a used, usable razor from the classifieds. If this doesn't work out for me, keep your eye on the classifieds for some excellent gear offered by me!!!

I can vouch for two things:

    1. He means it!

    2. You'll have fun!
