Hi from Scotland
Hi I'm a guy from Edinburgh who's thinking about getting into straight razor shaving - at the moment I'm commiting sacrilege and using a gillette (but with shaving soap, so I'm not completely mental...).
I was thinking about getting a Dovo ‘Best Quality’ razor to start out with, I'm a student so that doesn't break the bank while seemingly meets a benchmark. Would that be fair to say?
Anyway hi and any advice on a first straight would be welcome.
Look forward to speaking more on the forums

Welcome!
The DOVO Best Quality would make an excellent starter razor. You can get them shave ready from Steve Dempsters site here.
Steve is a member here, blueprinciple, and I've had a few razors from him that you could cleave atoms with..!
Also have a look at the Wiki and other articles linked in my sig line as they will really help you on your way.
You'll also need a strop to go with your razor. Neil Miller makes artisan strops here in the UK and you can get them via his site. Have a look in the Vendors Corner forum as well, for other strop sellers.
Other than that, make yourself at home and enjoy!
Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Stubear,
I think I'll get a hold of one of those then, and maybe a paddle strop too.
Cheers for the advice :-)

Welcome to the forum
Take your time looking thru the adds on here too there are plenty of cheep and cheerful starter razors for sale and all will come ready to shave but as Stu said Steve Dempster has new and vintage razors for sale here in the UK, as does Neil, so there no shortage of choice

Thanked: 0Welcome! Edinburgh is a very nice city. Sometimes I wish I lived there. As Stu pointed out, I'd try a DOVO until you get the hang of it.

Welcome to the forums. I'm also in scotland although in Glasgow.
It's nice to have you here, and hope you enjoy the journey, also as for a strop, the paddle strops by Neil Miller are rather very good, and I would recommend.

Ah great cheers for the advice.
I was wondering about soap as well, cos basically I have a shaving mug at the moment, and I like using the wee thing at the top to put soap in - but is shaving cream better?
Also as for soap I'm using one of those ones I got for free with the mug (so it's by cyril salter). Do you reckon it would be worth investing in a better one? For instance perhaps Castle Forbes?
Thanks,
Sheebay
P.S. Geek, I study in Glasgow but am at home in Edinburgh cos my parents live there :-)

Thanked: 227Howdy Sheebay
Well I never used the cyril r salter soap. However I'm a jumper lol I go from soap to cream depending on my morning mood, although I will say as a goto soap I quite like the boots one it's a good everyday, I actually bought it just for the black bowl lol but it wasn't too bad a soap, but to be honest I've been favouring a lime soap I won on here the other month
Also as you come into Glasgow or are in Edinburgh I would say try John Lewis, they have not a lot, but some good soaps/creams in there, TOBS and kent included. Also there's a crabtree and evelyn in Glasgow and I'm fairly partial to them.
So what is it you study here in wondeful Glesgae?
