Thanked: 1I got it bad!!
Hey My name is Mike, I just turned 30 and I love things that are old fashioned. I have about 8 razors currently and in the process of getting one sharp enough to get a good shave. Really cool forum you guys have here. I have gained a lot of good info on here, hopefully once i get a razor sharp I will stop hacking my face. lol.
Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to SRP! Patience is the true virtue here regarding not hacking up ones' face, I've been shaving with straights for a little over a year now. I don't know what happened today, but I had to bust out the stypic pencil today to staunch the bleeding as I somehow hacked up my face. Just take your time once you have the "shave ready" razor in hand and best of luck.

Welcome to SRP.
I found that you cant get complacent with shaving with a straight either. A couple of times I have got a bit lairy with it and cut the bejesus out of myself. Lesson learnt

Thanked: 66I agree!..
I..just for a split second mistook my razor blade for the handle piece!..ouch it went for my thumb..quarter inch cut..meh I thought..another "no biggie" and kept shaving..took 3 weeks to heal but am perfectly good ;-)
As I read from past pro's with razors "Respect must be given for a piece of metal against yer face"

Thanked: 1936Hey Mike, welcome to the forum! I would like to make a suggestion since it sounds like you are planning on honing your own razors. I'd like to recommend that you send one of those razors to a pro and have it honed. This way you will have a benchmark as all of the "tests" aren't scientifically conclusive. Sure helped me out a lot to have something to reference to...

Thanked: 1Thanks for a warm welcome.
Sorry to not get back for a bit been really busy with work out of town.
I am trying to get a good hone right now i have a few good ones but nothing fine enough to get in shape for proper shaving, I found a barber with tons of razors but he wouldnt touch mine as far a honing one... said he would hate to ruin one, I told him I didnt care and he still wouldnt. Ill probably send one or two to someone to be honed at some point.
I have been working on taking some pictures and will probably post a few tommorow if I get time... I currently have 2 JR Torreys, 1 Springfield hardware, 2 Shumate's a Dollar, and a model 30, a Premo (not sure about this brand) and 1 crappy Boker, and 1 crappy Zartina Cutlery.
