    Hello knirrir,
You're not far from me. If I can be of help with some honing or something, let me know.

Thanks - that is a very kind offer!

I've got one antique razor that needs to be restored and one new one that was supplied honed. I tried the new one today and I think I didn't do too badly for a very first attempt; three small nicks on tricky bits and an acceptable WTG shave other than missing the odd patch here and there. I suppose I ought to try again tomorrow...

The main difficulty seems to be that despite reading instructions here, stropping and in particular holding the razor seem very awkward. I presume these will come with practice. Also, I don't seem to have any luck creating decent foam - a problem I also had with safety razors. It looks OK to start with but dries out quickly and so I can only foam up one small patch at a time.

Welcome to SRP. Holding the razor was awkward for me as well at first. Making lather was hit and miss as well. With practice all of it became second nature. See my sig line below to avoid nicks and cuts.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Don't overdo things at first. It'll take a few weeks for your skin to adjust.

OK - I will remain cautious.
I found it interesting that I felt no razor burn, whereas it's normally quite unpleasant after a shave with a DE razor. However, as I only went WTG on this occasion that might explain it.
