    Default Greetings from Oxford

I've been lurking here for some time and a post touching on caring for one's razor in WWI prompted me to register and post.

Straight razor shaving is something I really ought to learn, as it would be useful for another hobby, and I've found a lot of useful information here. Having just obtained a cheap razor (honed before being sent to me) I hope to have the chance to try it out in the couple of days.

    Thanks for the welcome!
I don't know yet if I would be free for such an event but it's useful to know that it's there. If I can attend then it might be the place to ask about the maintenance honing of razors previously sharpened by an expert, as this is something that looks particularly daunting. But, I must actually learn to shave effectively before reaching that stage. ;-)

No worries, we're glad to have you with us!

In terms of the meet, we'll be covering as much as we can on the day.

I'm planning to do a honing workshop, there'll be a plethora of different stones there to try out as well, a whole load of strops including an awesome 'roo strop from MickR, there might be something on cleaning blades up with a Dremel plus the usual shaving, lathering and stropping bits as well.

Hope you can make it but if not there'll be another one next year..!

    Hello, Knererr:

Welcome to Straight Razor Place. My friend Stuart has given you plenty of information already. I wish I could join the get-together in London, but I am here in the U.S. I suggest attending the event and meeting all the SRP gentlemen.

    Regards,
    Obie

Thanks, that sounds very useful. It might be several weeks before I know if I can manage to go, though, and assumes that I do at least turn out to be competent at shaving...
Thanks to all for the welcome posts!

    My dear friend, Stuart:

Such delightful thoughts. Enjoy your event at Harris in London. Afterward, a pint or two in the local pub with our new friend Knirerr would be most appropriate. Have one for me.

    Regards,
    Obie

    Hello knirrir,
You're not far from me. If I can be of help with some honing or something, let me know.

Thanks - that is a very kind offer!

I've got one antique razor that needs to be restored and one new one that was supplied honed. I tried the new one today and I think I didn't do too badly for a very first attempt; three small nicks on tricky bits and an acceptable WTG shave other than missing the odd patch here and there. I suppose I ought to try again tomorrow...

The main difficulty seems to be that despite reading instructions here, stropping and in particular holding the razor seem very awkward. I presume these will come with practice. Also, I don't seem to have any luck creating decent foam - a problem I also had with safety razors. It looks OK to start with but dries out quickly and so I can only foam up one small patch at a time.
