welcome to the forum
If your razor is not shave ready, it will not provide a close comfortable shave, but the same can apply to poor or unpolished lathering and shaving techniques. Make sure your shaving razor is up to snuff, and keep practicing - and checking out the great info here on the forum of courseFind me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

Welcome to the forum, from a fellow Brit.
Congrats on your 1st straight shave.
My 1st pulled a lot, it was due to inexperience and poor blade angle, but yes your razor might need honing, what razor is it ? I knew mine was shave ready, it came from a member here.Regards
Nic

Hi, and Welcome...
You said the razor was "new". Many times, they are not what we call, "Shave Ready"
There are many chaps by you that can hone it up, Neil Miller comes to mind for one...
Also, When you first start out shaving with a str8, rawness and face irritation are par for the course, it happens, normally due to improper angle. Keep reading the wiki.
Make sure you do a good prep, stretch your skin, and watch the angle of the blade...Don't apply too much pressure when shaving, let the blade do the work.

Davey,
Welcome and hello from Hastings
We have a few chappies here in the UK who do superb honing:
1) Mr Neil Miller (www.strop-shop.co.uk)
2) Mr Steve Dempster (www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk)
3) Mr Gary Haywood (PM him here at SRP)
Have fun !
Best regards
