    Default Hey, Welcome!

Its a bit tough to talk about what might be making for the resistance to the blade. Big Kudos for buying reliably shave ready gear. 'Nice blade.

It's probably unlikely that Don on Lynn let one out without honing. If you are curious, you can compare the TPT to a DE blade. Due to coatings, etc, the DE may be a bit more sharp, but it should be in the same ballpark.

Next - tell us about beard prep, lather. 'Photo of the lather might be helpful. I'm not the best at the ultimate lather, but I can say I was pretty bad at it for a few months. What soap/cream/brush? I had one (Caswell Massey), that I couldn't lather for love nor money. It was banished to the shower for body bar work. The wikis and how to videos will be your friend here.

Keep posting. The help & attitudes here are as good as you'll find.

    Mark,

    Welcome to SRP!

Could you please elaborate on the "shave gel" you used?

You were wise to refrain from "pushing" the blade. A shave ready razor from SRD will do all of the work for you. No pressure is ever required to get a good shave. As you mentioned angle is very important. As pinklather mentioned, the quality of your lather is also important.

Remember to reduce the likelihood of nicks hold the razor like a bird - firm enough so it doesn't "get away" but gentle enough so you don't hurt it.

    Keep us posted.

    Greg

Thumb Pad Test to a double edge blade.

Where are you located in OH? If you are close to Medina make a return visit to Imperial.

What would i want to happen with a TPT?

I used Edge shave gel. I have like 3 cases of it from a gym my girl used to work at, i got all the left overs, so id like to use it up!

I just shaved again, second straight shave. I still feel like the hair is being ripped out almost. And i know im a newb, but im usually great about following new directions. I can pick up new skills with the proper instruction pretty well. This shave was more uncomfortable than the first. I tried a 30 degree angle on the right side of my face, and about a 15 on the left side. I got no difference in sensation. I only put water and the gel lathered really well, on the spot i was going to shave so it wouldn't dry up.

Im expecting this to be something that has a learning curve. But i also dont want to be doing it horrible wrong, OR have a razor that needs some work.

And I am in Akron. Not to far from you Bill. Near Todaros party center. Place called Hampton Knoll.

    mark,

I agree with the previous posts. I doubt if SRD would allow and unhoned razor to leave their eatablishment.

Part of your difficuty may be your use of shaving gel as opposed to a traditional shaving soap or cream as part of your beard prep. Gels ar ok for multi-blade razors, but I find them unsuitable for straight razor shaving imho.

You may want to consider getting some Proraso or some other quality, though inexpensive, shaving cream, along with an inexpensive bottle of bay rum. Lather your face with your brush, then massage the lather into your beard with your fingertips. Rinse, then apply some bay rum to your beard. Finally, relather and see what happens, being mindful of the pressure (light) and angle with which you attack your beard (angle of 15-30 degrees).

    See if that helps.

Thanks for the tips. Also, would it matter if i had 3 days of growth vs one? I had 3 days on the first shave yesterday. And today obviously only one day. But then again, i guess i answered my own question............
