Default Things to do before you reach 40!

Well, okay, so I dont recall ever listing straight razor shaving as one of them, but with four months to go I have just bought my first straight razor. Having spent a week or so reading up on it, and a couple more days plucking up the courage, my first REAL shave has got me hooked. Okay, so I've got a few nicks here and there and I finished my chin with a safety blade but I am set on learning this fine art. At least I hope to be able to shave with some confidence by the time I do turn forty.

Welcome, glad you found us here...

Congrats on your upcoming birthday! 4 months is plenty of time but do take it slow. Technique is key and with good technique comes speed and confidence so just be mindful and don't let things go too fast.

What razor are you shaving with?

Thanks for your welcome, encouragement and advice.

My razor is a 5/8, full hollow DOVO. (fifty pounds) I have skimped a little on the other bits, a cheap strop, synthetic brush and cheap soap but figure that these will suffice for now. Ryan

You have a good start...keep it simple at the beginning; get the ABC of wet shaving down pat i.e. your shaving technique, stropping and lathering. There will be time to move on to the next level. HOG

    Welcome to SRP!

Just take your time to get your technique down. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have. Very important keep the pressure very, very light both while stropping and shaving.

    Enjoy the journey.
