This guy needs a shave ;P
Hello All,
I got interested in straight razor shaving back in the summer of 2010. Didn't have the money to pull the trigger so I kinda forgot about it. Right before Christmas I was looking in the mirror and remarking to myself how the safety razors I was using were giving me an awful, awful shave (and I'm not a hairy guy, can't even grow a beard!). That's when i decided to put a straight razor on my list for Christmas.
I ended up with a nice Colonel Conk (that research on ye ol' straightrazorplace has lead my to believe is a dovo). Since then I've gotten a nice brush and some nice Truefitt and Hill soap, a norton 4k/8k as I want to learn to hone, ordered a totally destroyed wade and butcher from Ebay for honing practice.
I'm excited to be onto such a great ritual and I enjoy every shave thoroughly!

Thanked: 1195Welcome to SRP! From Sherwood Park, too.... good to see someone local. FYI there are a few members here from Edmonton, just keep an eye out for us if you need any help.
Sounds like you got some nice stuff to start, except you didn't mention a strop. You'll probably want to pick one up sooner rather than later. Also, please consider either buying a shave-ready blade or sending out a razor to be pro honed. You'll thank yourself later and you'll get a good idea of how sharp an edge should be. Other than that be sure to read the wiki and forums about beard prep, stropping & shaving technique and I'm sure you'll be off to a good start.
Have fun,
Ryan

Ryan,
Thanks for the response.
I do indeed have a strop I just didn't mention it.
My full "kit" includes
razor
strop (leather and linen)
yellow band strop paste
variety of sample shaves and balms
brush, stand for brush, soap (truefitt & hill)
1000 grit hone
norton 4k/8k
practice razor
does anything seem to be missing?
I also appreciate the comment about the "shave ready" razor. I've read that most Dovo's don't come shave ready so I emailed the supplier and he said it was. It also seems to pass the shave test and has no problem with arm hair. So I'm not too sure what to make of it at this point. What does your experience tell you?
Glad to see there are some fellow straight razor shavers around town!

Basically what Ryan said +1. Where did you get the razor from? That'll help us know if it is shave ready

strop paste
Please remember that you do not want to put paste on ur daily strop that is for a spare strop that you will only use when the razor startes to pull.

Catrent,
do you know where I could send it to have it honed to "shave ready"?
It already does a pretty good job so I'm excited to see it when it's properly honed!
Also, Deerhunter, should I not put yellow band paste on my daily strap? or are you referring to a type of strop paste that has an abrasive sharpening effect?
thanks for all the help,
