Thanked: 0Howdy
Hello everyone. I guess I'll tell you about shaving and me.
I used to hate shaving. Used a Mach-3 when I had to, but had a beard or some variation pretty much since my facial hair started growing. Late last year, my wife asked me to do a goatee. So I decided to abandon the cartridge world, since I was going to have to shave a significant amount on a daily basis.
Around the beginning of this year, I started using soap with a badger brush, and a Merkur safety razor. Ran into a problem with hard water right out of the gate. My soaps were useless until I started using microwaved bottled water to create the lather. Might get a water softener down the line, but for now I at least have a working process.
The results were amazing. If I ever shaved 2 days in a row with the disposables, I would look like I shaved with a steak knife. On a moving bus. Driving down a bumpy road. In the dark. While drunk. But with the safety razor, I could achieve baby-butt perfection every day.
But something kept drawing me to the straight razors. And I finally got one about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday was only the 2nd time I did my entire face using it. I was working up to it, switching between the DE and the straight. The results aren't there just yet. But I notice improvement daily, and what I am getting from the straight razor is passable for anything short of a job interview.
I look forward to talking to everyone - but that's better for the specific threads, I guess.

Welcome to the party Huston. It's always encouraging to hear the words of one starting down this journey. The hobby is a wonderful one, and can truly change the way you look at the daily grooming ritual.
Even better, though, is the brotherhood available here on the site! Take your time, read the wiki, and never be afraid to ask questions. There are so many incredible gentlemen (and women) on this site that are incredibly generous with their time and experience. You will certainly find help for any little issues you're experiencing.
Glad to have you here!
