Pennsylvania
Hi,
My name is Jim from central PA. I have been lurking on here for a few days and decided to join. My current setup is a DE slant bar, feather blades, Proraso preshave and soap. I have a straight razor and strop on order.
My plan is to learn the straight razor on my days off. My first question is what comes next if I find I like this? A pasted strop, then some stones later on?
I am open to all advice, thanks

First, welcome to SRP, we're glad to have you with us. Sounds to me like you got the basics covered, once you get the strop in house. You did not mention a brush but I am expecting you got one anyways, since you are using soap. You really don't need anything more. A pasted strop will be nice, and a barber's hone is also very useful. And more knives. More scuttles. More stones. More soaps. Lol, you get the idea. But for now, you got all you need. Just enjoy and have fun, you'll soon see what you want next.

Welcome to the SRP. As far as straights go, Get your straight honed by a pro. That way, you will know what sharp is and how it will feel on your face. Step 2 would be to get a second straight honed by a pro, because you will f up razor #1 by poor stropping, but you will learn ( watch stropping videos) So now the second straight will be ready for use while you send the one you f-ed up,out to be rehoned. Proper stropping will keep those razors shaving fine. Forget about honing for the first 6 months and just learn how to strop and handle a straight. All the videos are on SRP so take the time and PAY ATTENTION GREEN HORN !!!! Just kidding Have fun!

Hi Jim,
Welcome to the forum. This can be a very addicting hobby, at least for some of us. Probably a finishing hone would be the next logical purchase. The aforementioned Barber hone, or something similar. 8k and above are considered finishing hones. A chinese 12k is also a popular first hone, it's cheap, and very fine. It doesn't remove much metal, like a Barber hone. I believe Barber hones also rated right around 8-12k. Check the Wiki here for "Hone Comparison Table" If you don't have a brush and mug/scuttle, you may want to invest in that, and some soap or cream. There are some awesome shave creams out there, Castle Forbes and Truefitt and Hill to name a few. Mitchells' wool fat and Tabac are great soaps....
SRD too has some great shave soaps....
P.S. Pasted strops are good for touch ups, or putting that little extra something on a shave ready blade. You just can't use them all the time, You need to use hones too....We have assumed control !

Thanks everyone for the sound advice. Not to worry, this greenhorn plans to watch the videos and the DVD before I attempt anything. The straight I have ordered is "shave ready" and I can see now where a second one would come in handy as I learn. Could be the start of a new addicting hobby.
This sure is a great site. Lots of good info here. Once again thanks.

Thanked: 240Welcome aboard and be sure to keep us updated once you get the strop and razor. I think some guys are trying to get a Penn meet together, if it comes to fruition it may be a good thing for you to stop by if you can make it. You can learn a lot from videos and this site but nothing is better than watching and talking to people in real life.
