Thanked: 0Greetings to all!
Greetings from the 'Rock', Newfoundland island, Canada, where Spring is ever-so-gradually creeping upon us to free us from the icy grip of winter.
I go by the user name, chellam, which my wife tells me means 'pet' in Tamil. Might actually mean 'dog face' or 'monkey's arse' for all I know but I'll have to take her word on that.
I like straight razors for nostalgic reasons and purchased several on eBay a few years back to both collect and also use to trim my beard with. In fact I've sorta always tended toward the old and antiquated....which brings me back to my wife....only joking...don't worry she'll never read this...will she?
To conclude my intro, I should state that I'm 57 years old and like to think I know something about maintaining, stropping and honing a straight razor......I actually don't.....but, as I stated, I like to think I do. Anyway, I hope to learn what I don't know about maintaining a straight razor from you wonderful folks on this forum and I have many questions to pose to you on this subject. God bless.

Welcome to the forum. I've been to New Foundland, actually St.Johns, but close. I remember the tide shifts were incredible. We were the first US Navy ship to pull into that port in many years. It had to be the late 80's. I had a lot of fun. Great Beer. A lot stronger than the US. I remember going to a party in what seemed to be an old castle? but I was drunk at the time. I do recall how nice all the Canadians were to us. Everyone treated us like celebrities. Very nice people...and there was Cuban cigars........
It was just a great time. So, Str8 razors. It can be an addicting, but rewarding hobby. I've been doing it for years, and I'm still impressed with the shaves I get. So smooth. I still make my wife touch my face, or I shove a brush full of cream under her nose, and say, "Smell this"...."Isn't that awesome..."
Glad to have you here, Ask questions...

Thanked: 0What a great site!
Thanks wmac and zib. I've been reading the Wiki and watching a few videos for several hours now and I'm truly impressed and humbled with the level of knowledge and craft of some individuals when it comes to such seemingly straight forward tasks as putting an edge on a blade not to mention restoring old razors. I envy their patience and skill. And on top of that, the kindness of their souls in going to great lengths to share that information purely to help others. Honestly, I take off my hat, or in my case my 'Totonto Maple Leafs' touk, to them. This is a great site with class A contributors.
Already many of my questions have been answered just by the reading and viewing I've done and I'm certain most of remaining ones will also likewise be answered in time such as; How does an old 103 SIC Carborundum razor hone compare with modern water stones of known grit? Is it comparable to a 4k, 5k, 8k, or some other as far as fineness goes?
Anyway, much more reading to do and info to digest. Take care.Last edited by chellam; 04-21-2011 at 11:57 AM. Reason: spelling error
