Default New to the forum - and Str8

    Hello,

I am a going to be receiving 4 nice razors (bought from the bay) probably next week along with my poor man's strop.

Gotta, Hellberg, Blue Special and a Clauss. Some are shave ready, other will need to be restored.

I have been using a DE razor for the past year and have greatly enjoyed this. Looking to shave the old(er) fashion way. Also, there is a little anticipation and adrenaline to the thought of putting the sharpest blade possible on your face without cutting yourself to piece.

looking forward to exchanging more information on this subject.

As part of my other interest, I am a fountain pen collector/restorer (Cloud on fountainpennetwork), e-bike builder (endless-sphere) and a DIY audio fanatic also. There are so many interesting thing to learn =)

Anyway, back to the subject, my father never showed me how to shave, and I thus started with a disposable 2 blade that franlky hurt my face to shave, then moved on to the mach 4 which was adequate for many years. I have never been able to use a electric razor... Last year I decided to make an experiment and try DE, and even potentially save money with the price of the blades =) THis was a success and cost so much less then mach3 or mach4 disposable that it actually frees up some money to invest in other shaving goodies =)

I swithed from derby to feather blade last week and couldn't be happier, derby did pull on the hair wheras feather blade really cut. Looking forward to try str8 and share with the rest of you.

    Feathercloud,

Welcome to SRP. Happy to have you aboard.

Your journey to straight razors is a lot like mine. First, a de razor; then a straight razor.

It sounds like you got a nice haul of straight razors off of ebay. You'll have to post some pics of them when you have the opportunity.

Hello Feathercloud, and welcome to SRP

Your DE experience should stand you in good stead to make the transition to the straight. Like the DE face preperatin plays a big part and I am assuming that you are already building lather from soap (not canned gel/foam) The "ADRENALINE RUSH" becomes more manageable over time and in fact when you get the technique down, and are experiencing quality shaves that same rush comes after the shave with a sense of WOW!

    Good luck and enjoy

Welcome to SRP, good to have you with us. This place has a wealth of knowledge for beginning straight shavers, check out the wiki and the video subsection, that should give you a good grasp on the basics. Check out GSSixgun's beginner's tips, there's loads of handy info there. Beyond that, you'll find this place has lots of helpful people in case you get stuck. Let us know how you fare.
    Best of luck.

Thanks all. Received my strop and first razor today. I will wait to receive them all before sending them to the honemeister. I may have more time to look at it tomorrow.

    Cheers

    Welcome Feather!

I'd recommend using a butter knife to practice your strop technique for the 2 weeks or so of turnaround time on getting your blades honed.

I want to hear more about your DYI audio stuff though. I've seen kits online to make your own speakers, and my dad made his own amp a good 35 years ago. What kind of stuff do you build?
