    Default New girl

Hi there! I'm a female who just started working in a barbershop. One of the requirements was that I learn to use a disposable blade straight razor (to shave the back of a neck). Since I had no beard to practice on I started with my legs.

I absolute love using this tool! I hated shaving because I'd always get razor burn or some type of skin irritation. I have no problems anymore and it wasn't that hard to get the hang of.

Eventually I'd like to get a real, solid razor and a nice brush to use (as opposed to the crappy $3 one) with my awesome homemade shaving soap. Right now the disposable is fine but I'm curious at how a solid one differs. Gotta save up some cash!

Welcome aboard!!! You can get a nice vintage straight for less then you may think and they are as good if not better then the ones being produced today, the classifieds here are a great place to start. I have never tried the disposable straight so I cannot comment on how they differ but I hear that the disposables can be harsher and less forgiving. Check out the ladies corner for tips on shaving as I doubt too many of the guys here can be much help when it comes to shaving your legs. I think carrieM is responsible for granting access to the area forbidden to us boys so you might consider sending her a PM.

Hi "New Girl" Welcome and congrats on the job. You know, They used to teach Barber's back in the day on Balloons. Yup, they'd lather one up, and they'd have to shave it without poping it. The guys are correct, there's lot's of deals to be had in the classifieds sections. The thing with a regular old straight is, It will need to be sharpened from time to time. You can send it out, but for someone like you, (Barber) that may be using it a lot, You'll need a "Barber's hone" for touch ups, or something similar. BTW, Where are you in the world?

We should have some Mentor's around here that are willing to help and guide you. If not, feel free to drop me a pm on here. If I can help, I will...

Hello, and welcome to SRP. You'll find a wealth of information here, and in our wiki. We also have a Ladies Corner where you'll find quite a number of other ladies who are into this hobby of ours.

As for your question: he difference is that an actual razor handles differently, and will typically be a tad less sharp than a disposable, yet give you a smoother, more comforable shave. You don't need much gear to get started. A 5/8 or 6/8 blade with a strop, and possibly a pasted strop or barber hone for upkeep of the edge, and you are pretty muhc set for life. The razor will outlive you by centuries if you treat it properly, and unless you really ding the edge, a pasted strop or barber hone can keep the edge indefinitely. And you'll need a normal strop for daily use.

If you buy them from our classifieds section, approx 150$ will set you for life.

Its nice to see more ladies joining. Lots of great advice so far especially finding a local member to mentor you. It will especially help if you decide to start honing.

Great information! I'd like to find a local mentor... but according to the Map there's not too many people here in Maine, haha!

Sweet, I stayed in Maine when i was 12 with an american family for 6 weeks, beautiful place, in fact the whole of New England is. This doesn't help with your mentor search sadly, but you know, just sayin'
