    Default New from SoCal

    Hey SRP,

I've been lurking here for a while and over at B&B even longer and I have to say, members of said forums seem to be a classy bunch (a pleasant surprise from the typical forum). I've been shaving with DE razors for probably 2-3 years. Straights have always interested me but I never decided to get one until now - it will be arriving tomorrow. While skimming through the wiki (or maybe a thread?) I believe I saw something that said if there is plating on the spine of the razor, it might be a good idea to cover this with electrical tape when stropping. Is this true? Or is that just for honing? If it's any help, the razor I bought is the Dovo Silver Steel.

    Any help/advice is much appreciated.

    Welcome,
No need for tape when stropping.
With regards to honing with tape, it has been a subject of a great deal of discussion, in the end it appears to come down to personal preference and what you are trying to achieve with your honing. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will comment with regards to this.

    Welcome to SRP,

+1 to the above. Tape while stropping is not necessary. IMO that would be a super PITA to apply and remove each time I had to strop the razor.

In terms of honing, when the time comes, to tape or not to tape.....that is the question. Lots of discussion and healthy debate on that issue. Personally, I tape when I hone.

    Thanks guys.
This is good news! I'm not quite ready to try my hand at honing yet so I'll just leave that to the professionals for now lol. I was worried that I might have to tape it every time I stropped though so I definitely feel relieved.
