Hello, gentlemen
Greetings, everyone!
I've been lurking here for months, researching the art and biding my time. A few weeks ago while on vacation I picked up three antique straights for $20, and by the time I got home from holiday I had the bug. I jumped online and ordered some beginning equipment (poor man strop kit, cheap badger brush, VDH soap, and a Dovo Silver Steel Ebony—masterfully honed by Lynn).
So last night I lost my straight razor virginity. And it was pretty good. I went against advice and shaved my entire face, but I went slowly, and very lightly. Even though I didn't get a super-close shave (didn't expect to), I avoided any nicks or razor burn. My face feels fantastic today.
Why did I ditch the can and disposables?
- Nostalgia
- Tired of razor burn and ingrown hairs
- The pursuit of the smoothest shave
- Nothing makes you feel manly like holding a crazy-sharp blade millimeters from your jugular and carotid
I'm looking forward to the lifelong pursuit of mastery of this gentlemanly art. Thank you for all the information that you freely share. I'm looking forward to the day when I can give valuable advice to future rookies.
Cheers,
Logan

Welcome Lungo.
Your reasons for straight shaving are pretty common around here. Many of us enjoy the nostalgia of the process as well feel that new is not always better. it seems through the 70's society took a change where good was not good enough and we always wanted more and better. No longer having a good life like our Parents or Grand Parents was enough we wanted a better life or more material things. Lots of theories of why but those of us are better off for another day.
Enjoy your DOVO, read lots here and ask as many questions as you need to. The journey is a fun one with lots of good people along the way
