Talking Hello from the Big Bend of Texas!

    Hello All,
I am a twenty year old geology undergraduate student at Sul Ross State University, and I am a recent "convert" to straight razors. The first straight razor shave I received was when I turned 16. I went for a haircut but received that first straight razor shave as a birthday present from my barber. Wow what an experience!

I now have been analyzing my use of cheap plastic razors most of my life and have come to the conclusion that they lack both quality and cost benefits. I pay a lot annually for a shave that I never look forward to and a shave that leaves my face rough with still remaining whiskers. I finally put down the money for an Ebony Dovo Astrale straight razor shave kit from Straight Razor Designs. It's supposed to come in today!

My friends think I'm crazy, but this is such a rare skill that the time and effort will be worth it. I have an innate appreciation for good blades such as scandinavian knives and axes and I think restoring old razors will become a part of my interesting in no time at all.

I would appreciate any advice for my hopefully soon upcoming shave (Just the sideburns on the dominate side of course.) Thanks for this great forum!

Welcome to the fourm. I think you'll enjoy the str8 razor. There's a learning curve, so don't get discouraged. Straight razor shaving will become something you look forward to each and every day. Make sure you check out our wiki, especially the beginner's section. If you have any questions, just ask....

Welcome to SRP and the world of str8 shaving. I'm sure you'll find shaving to be a ritual to soon look forward too! I know I do now.

Hello and welcome! It's great you're starting as young as that.

We have a South African member who picked up a whole lot of Geology knowledge somewhere (I don't think it's his profession) and has found at least one very good deposit of natural hones. Here's one of his threads.

Good luck with your studies and shaves.
