Thread: Hi from Perth

Hi all,

I'm Sy from Perth. I've just started de shaving about 2 months ago, I must say I really loved it. The razor that I have is feather popular with feather blades. It is a gentle shaver even with A feather blade.

Yesterday I just had my first straight razor shave with a dovo shavette. That thing is really flimsy, I don't think it warrants the price tag. Anyhow, first pass wtg was okay, poked my neck with the tip of the blade (I really dont know how I did that). Thought of being brave and go for xtg pass. Stupid idea. Went ok on the cheek, but cut myself up on the chin, above and under the lips.

Think I'll leave it to heal for a few days and try again.

Hi Sy, welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll find this as friendly and helpful a place as I have - feel free to ask any questions you may have, there will be no shortage of people willing to help.

Shavette's look pretty tricky to use in my opinion - I jumped straight into the straight razor and skipped the shavette. Having looked at one closely, I think it would be too easy to catch yourself alot with the edges/corners of the blade. For starters though, I would stick to doing the easy bits of the face, i.e. the cheeks, perhaps the front of the chin, until you get used to handling the razor - then you can try a full pass and see how you get on. I shaved wtg only for the first few weeks to let my skin adjust, then started working in a xtg pass as well - no razor burn as yet so it must be working!

P.S. Which Perth are you from, Scotland, Australia etc?

Welcome to SRP. I shaved for a very short time with a shavette because i kept cutting my face up with it. Got a straight razor and never looked back. Shavettes seem to me to give a very harse shave but i was new at the time so maybe it was me.

Welcome to SRP Sy. G'day from Brisbane. I would suggest that the shavette is not a great starter, they tend to be less forgiving in my opinion. I would suggest a round point straight that is shave ready. Himage down in Sydney, has the Dovo Best Quality for $90 but these are factory sharpened (not shave ready).
You might be better to have a look at the SRP classifieds for something less pricey that is shave ready.

As has already been said, start slow and take your time. It sounds like you are off to a good start with the wtg pass. Just stay with that and move to atg and xtg as you become more proficient. Enjoy the ride.

If you're a sandgroper try getting in touch with Brighty83 who is a regular on these forums and also from Perth. It's a lot easier to pick up and learn things when you're in contact with someone else local.

Biggest learning curve for me wasn't so much handling the razor, which comes with experience, but doing the pre-shave preparation. Getting a decent soap and brush to make a good lather going makes a world of difference even with a cartridge shaver let alone a properly sharp cut throat.

@Str8Raz0r I did order a beginner set from SRD, Dovo 6/8 best quality. It's just I am too chicken to try it out. The shipping hits home hard though. Where do you normally get your razors and supplies?

Oh yes, I used a Derby blade, with Simpson Pure badger brush and Palmolive shave stick (not the Europe one, though still makes good lather). I think I'm doing ok in lathering up, although sometimes the lather seems to deteriorate so quickly after first pass. Do I have to re-apply the shave stick on every pass?

Hi Sy, good to see yet another Australian here! I've found it difficult to get good straight razor and cream/soaps in Australia, but menzbiz.com.au are pretty good, reasonably priced and fast. I've also had good success with straightrazorsupplies.com, classicshaving.com, executive-shaving.co.uk and vintagescent.com...

Himage are pretty good, reasonable prices and no postage. They have a number of straights as well as heaps of DEs and associated kit. Chris is really helpful.

Give the dovo a go You should be fine.

1) At the top right of the screen there is a line that starts "Welcome, [your name} ..."
If you click on your name that sends you to your profile page.

2) On the left hand side bar there is a list of options, starting with "send Private message, send email ..."

3) Click on the "send Private Message" and that sends you to the Message screen.

4) To send a PM to an existing member start typing their name in and an autocomplete will start bringing up all the members, and once you have typed enough letters brighty83's name will appear in a drop down box, click on the name and then compose your message from there.
