A big HOLA from Barcelona Spain
Well today is the day I finally got around to posting at least something on this amazing forum.
I have been actively collecting straights for only around 2 months but I have been manically reading posts, gathering volumes of information in order to hit the floor running as hard as I can.
I would say that the "bug has bitten hard" however mine seems to be much larger
If everyone here were to describe what their attraction to the Cult of Straight Razing is there would be many differing reasons given. For now mine are as follows:-
i) the manly arts of a bygone era
ii) ol school quality craftmanship
iii) thrill of discovering new and hidden gems from many different countries
iv) enjoyment of restoring razors to their former glory - Brad (undream) is inspirational in his video post!
v) challenge & satisfaction of sharpening to a very fine edge
v) SICK TO THE BACK TEETH of paying a fortune for disposable razors that ARENT razor sharp.
vi) an everyday living museum - we use and enjoy on a daily basis beautiful items can be considered works of art, where form follows function. While a painting can be enjoyed daily, or a piece of jewelery can be worn daily, these can be considered luxuries and not daily necessities. For me straight razors have the enjoyment of functional art and more. As a boy watching my dad shaving was a memorable moment, something to look forward to and be emulated in the years to come. He didn´t use straight razors but I´m sure his dad did.
Well.............this is what happens when you have a lot to say and not much time to say it o_O
Hope this is not over the top for some.
Looking forward to getting to know many more people here.
Lots to learn and a desire to learn it well
Best regards to all
Shane

Shane, Welcome and big congrats for choosing quality over marketing.
Str8s have all the elements to capture the masculine imagination. They're a tool, they're sharp (or should be), they shine, they perform when manipulated correctly, they have artistic attributes both functional and aesthetic, and they remove you from the disposable stranglehold. And they're the best shave on the planet.
'Glad you found your way here, and it'll be good to see your ongoing posts.

Thanked: 102Welcome Shane! Forty four years ago I turned 21 years old in Barcelona, Spain and had a wonderful birthday. I will always remember that city with much affection. As you so well stated, shaving with a straight razor is an art and a science. Again, welcome.

I got into straight shaving because of the coolness factor. I also enjoy the better shave and nostalgia feeling I get.

Hello, Shane, and welcome to Straight Razor Place. I wanted to shave with the straight razor as far back as my early twenties. Now, decades later, I have finally fulfilled that wish. Why shave with the straight razor? Well, for me, the answer is simple. I have always felt I belong to the 19th century, and that's as good a reason as any. Stay well.

ps for those who don´t know the icon I am using for now is that of Ned Kelly.
He happens to be Australias most famous outlaw (bushranger).
If you haven´t seen the Heath Ledger movie I recommend it.
And yes I´m an Aussie mate!!Last edited by bonitomio; 09-23-2011 at 09:01 AM. Reason: post script

G'day from Oz Shane ! & Welcome to SRP. Looks like Ned needed a good shave in that pic
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

@onimaru55
Shame that. Lesson to us all of us.............don´t let your nerves put you off using a straight razor too long.
Things could get out of hand
Back in his day he didn´t have SRP to ask for help
