Hello, Nice to be here
Hi, its nice to be here at last.
bit of info, my name is steve, i live in sheffield in the uk.
i suppose i started the open razor route because i was fed up with the mess the mach3 was making of my face, in addition to the cost of the replacements for it.
i had tried straight razor shaving once in my early twenties, as my dad had got one from somewhere and knowing that i liked knives given it to me. i didn't have a good enough shaprening kit for it then so my first goes were a bit of a pain. so i left it.
till now. working where i do now i have access to decent grades of lapping film, so after setting the bevel on a 24mic diamond, i worked through 12mic diamond, 8mic saphire, 3mic diamond and finally 1mic diamond, the lapping films on an optical flat. it was then stropped on a piece of leather with green compound on.
i ahve been using it to shave with for 3 goes now, every other night untill i get better technique. i have also just recieved a new razor, its about 80 years old, a company called Ford and Medley of Sheffield. its a 5/8 Arrow razor. the last of the company production was put into storage, and not seen the light of day until recently. i look forward to using it soon.
all the best
steve

well i used my new razor this morning, it was a nice comfy shave. i know where i need to improve, ie the point of the jaw and most importantly in the production of decent lather. i think this will be my last morning shave after a shower, as i was pushed to get to work. but i can't get in the shower earlier as it wakes my 10month old up. eveing it is then.

Hi Steve,
That's the way it was for me, too. You'll find that as you improve you will get quicker and you'll be able to work your shave into your morning routine. Even so, I still find that sometimes it's nice to have a relaxing shave at the end of the day with few constraints on my time.

well my last shave didn't go so well. lacked decent lather again i feel. hohum. also noticed a few scratches on the visage, on inspection of the blade i noticed a little ding about 3/4" from the toe. damn, that means i'm going to have to destroy the edge that i put a lot of newbie effort into making. drat. onthe other hand, i think i probably honed with too much presure on the blade, which would have thinned the edge angle too much, so this time a light hand it it.
i'm glad i didn't pay for it, or that i think its particulary rare, a royal crown razor, extra hollow 6/8 for intrested parties.
on a positive note i have some trumpers sandlewood cream on the way, so hope a nice weekend shave will be the result.
cheers all
steve
