Thanked: 46Hi and welcome.
I'd suggest that given just how fine the actual edge on a razor is the grind will have little if anything to do with how fast it dulls. A really well honed blade is only about 0.35um (micron) thick and there's not a huge variation in the bevel angle. Having said that there can be a huge difference in how they feel, even amongst full hollow grinds from one make to the next. Enjoy your exploration, there's a whole world of blades out there to experience.

Thanked: 485Welcome.
I, on other hand, do not like the term 'cut throat' as I feel it has a rather negative connotation. However, I didn't know it was an Australian term...
Anyway, grinds. What you REALLY want, is a bunch of different grinds and widths. I didn't know that when I started, but Mick and Mick and others gently mocked my comments about having a 'single' razor and being 'minimalistic' and then when, after weakening, I upped the limit to three (but bought a fourth) they politely asked "didn't you say THREE was the limit?" I'm now considering taking my (three razor) case to the Mr Minute Man and having him engrave "I" on one and (when I get the other) "II" on the other (allowing for "III" and "IV" and "V" and "MDCCC", etc).
It's amazing how different grinds and widths interplay to give you a different feel. You NEED (yes NEED) to try them out. It's all part of the fun...Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 0Hmm makes sense Mick.
Yeah I've been flicking through pages the last couple of nights. There is tons of info on this site, its crazy, who would of thought there was so much on these cut throats!
Lol yep, beware the drop bear! I've had plenty of fun with my imported mates on that.. Admittedly I'm a cider man though.

Thanked: 485Nothing wrong with cider, it was my beverage of choice @ 19 for the drive-in (flagon). Made for a rather interesting drive home in the 250CI TC Ford Cortina, with the back end constantly wanting to be the front end...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 983I started with just one cut-throat (Or if you insist on not using the term cut-throat, I'll switch to the British vernacular and say Open Razor) too mate . Then I stopped at two, and was good with that right up until I thought a wider blade or a Bengall would be nice to have...Just to try you know. So I got a Bengall through kindness and charity and had it restored with more of the same and some trading of skills. But it was a shade narrow of 6/8, not as wide as I wanted to try, having two 5/8's already. So I bought a Wosty pipe in 13/16. Nice razor. Fell in love with that one...Still am. Mate of mine bought me a Gotta 120 in 6/8 shortly after, but I had discovered my taste lay in the bigger blades and with some more trading of skills, I soon had an OCD 8/8 custom in the mail and I found love once again. Now you tell me...Can you really just stop at one? I thought I was a minimalist. In fact I'm sure I am, just not with cut-throats. Although I do only use one at a time...

Thanked: 485Oh, hey, I'm not insisting on nothing. I'm just a newbie here still. Based on my knowledge (at least the way it works in Mt Torrens) I've gotta be here for 20 years before I can be a local (I've got 6 years to go to be a local at Mt Torrens, when I played darts the other night they insisted I was a 'ring in', and insisted I didn't live here, I'm a little, um, hermit-ish)...
I get what you're saying; I'm pretty 'bare bones' with most stuff, but I do know I've got more straights in less time than with my other obsessions, though German Vintage Cameras and Vintage Cufflinks are strong contenders.
One day soon I'll have to get one of your strops, my Dovo is looking like it wants to be pasted....Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 2Greetings from another Aussie n00b! In fact I am currently sitting stroking my lengthening stubble, waiting for my first useable straight... err, sorry Mick... cut-throat to arrive in the mail hopefully tomorrow. (Wasn't aware cut-throat was an Australian term either! I Call them straights cos apparently everything I've learnt about them is from Americans on the interwebz!) I'm just down the road on the Gold Coast, and strangely also a cider man! You tried the new 5-Seeds flavour yet?

Thanked: 0Hi Carl, thanks. I agree that the term 'cut throat' sounds off putting, it seems a few of us Aussies were unaware. Perhaps it isn't an Aussie term, I suspect Mick is just trying to set a new trend .
Yep, well my first is a full hollow, and I'm assuming its a 5/8, but the advert didn't specify. I like the look of microtomes and near wedges though, so I think that'll be the next I acquire. As for quantity, I don't think I'll limit myself just yet.
Haha, if the back end is trying to outdo the front, you're slowing down to much.
Well each to there own, I figure as long as you find what works for you and enjoy it, its mission accomplished.
Hey Dean, sounds good, what grind / width etc did you go for? Do you mean the cloudy cider, green label? If so then yes, not sure if I like it any better than the normal 5 seed though. As far as value for money, 5 seeds is great. Finding a place with Bulmers on tap is even better though ^_^

Thanked: 2Hey Shane, I got one these white stamped Dovo 5/8's from Johnmrson:
http://straightrazorpalace.com/vendo...ore-dovos.html
Reason being simply that Dovo is a respected brand, these were a bargain price, Johnmrson comes highly regarded by the other members here, and I'm just hanging to get started! I will definitely try some different sizes etc at a later stage, but I figured 5/8 is a popular size so I can't go wrong!
Yea the cloudy Cider, that's it! Been meaning to try some. Bulmers on tap you say? Wow, I thought I was lucky finding 5 Seeds on tap!
