Thanked: 0Hi from Toronto
Hi,
Was turned onto the forum from a friend on another forum. Definitely interested in getting into the world of straight razors!
Looking to get a beginner razor/beginner set to get started in the world! Any recommendations?
Thanks!

LOL Not often but I stick with pre1850 razors and the more rustic the better
Contact your local shavers and try getting in on the meet and greats. You'll see alot of gear and razors that you can start finding what you really like faster that wayPlus the tips on just about everything involved. By experiencing different ways you can experience new ways to get the job done, and there are many "right ways" as well as wrong to get the job done. Going to the "Meets" is allot of fun and practical

Thanked: 0Just took the plunge and ordered a set off of SRD. Will be looking to pick up another for the rotation from the classifieds.
When I absolutely wreck the edge on both of them in the first week, is there a good place to get them honed?
As for meet ups, I always love the idea. You try and talk to people about things like this and they just don't understand!
Its like trying explain to someone why you just spend 500 dollars on a custom kitchen knife that won't be done for 8 months. They'll think your crazy!
At the meetups or on the forums they'll think its the greatest idea in the world!

Welcome to SRP!
I'm not sure of your budget but the best place to look would be Straight Razor Designs (ad is on right side of page). A second option if you are on a budget would be to check out WhippedDog.com, they have some good sets too.
Any ? Just let us know!

Larry at whippeddog.com has some great deals for starting out. That way you don't break the bank and find out you hate straight shaving.

Thanked: 993Ahhh, yes....the people from Toronto are taking over the world! (Ok...well maybe not).
Nice to see another local boy on here.
For beginner stuff I'd check 1) Straight razor Designs.....they have complete sets with a razor, brush, strop. 2) Our Classifieds section.....that will save you money....but you'll still need a strop 3) WhippedDog, Larry always has some affordable products ready to go.
My advice would be to stay away from Ebay until you know exactly what you're doing. Purchase a razor from a reputable vendor, which is "shave ready", and get a good strop. Your strop will be the second most used piece of equipment in your shave arsenal....don't skimp on it. Save money on a brush, by purchasing a boar brush, ....and save money on soap, by starting with something easy to lather such as Proraso (at Shoppers Drug Mart for $8).
Good luck....and PM me if you need anything. I'm probably just around the corner.

Welcome to another Toronto boy! Maxi covered most of what you need, but here are my suggestions.
From Shopper's Drug Mart in Toronto:
Omega 10005 Boar Bristle Brush with Ash wood handle - $14.99
Proraso Shaving Soap (you can go for either the green eucalyptus/menthol version, or the white aloe/sensitive version) - $8.99 (what Maxi mentioned)
Proraso Aftershave Splash or Balm (same as above, green or white) - $15.99???
Optional
Proraso Pre/Post cream (green or white).
I saw them in stock at the Yonge & St. Clair Shoppers a couple of days ago.
