Thread: Hello from Salt Lake City

Hello everyone,


I've been using cartridge razors for most of my adult life and canned foam for much of that time but I go through phases where I use a brush and quality cream or soap and I do love it so. I've also been wanting to try the SR route but just never have gotten around to it.
Knowing this, my wife got me a gift card from AOS this Christmas and I'm about to head over there today to use it. I already think I know what I'm getting (one of the less expensive SRs, a strop, strop paste, and a small starter kit of products, including a brush) but I'm glad I came here this morning to do some research first. I might have actually believed they were shave ready, for one thing. Anyone in the SLC area know a good place I can bring it to have it honed? I also realize I'd get much more for my (or her) money elsewhere, but it's what I have to work with.


Anyway, I'm glad I found you guys and I'm sure I will be posting much in the next couple weeks. Thanks!

Well, it's not usually wise to assume. You could have been a Stephen Hawking fan.

I figure, though any fan of the former is probably going to at least like the latter.

Welcome from a fellow Utahn. I am 12 months into SR shaving and have become fairly competent with shaving and stropping, but have only begun to tackle honing.

There are a lot of accounts of people on this forum that purchased new "shave ready" razors at stores that were only partially honed at the factory resulting in a bad first experience. I am not aware of any pro honers in Utah and would steer clear of the two knife/ scissor sharpening shops in SLC. I would instead send it out to one of the SRP vendors for $15-$20 or see if Chay has any ideas--he seems to be honing based on his posts. I have four razors that I sent to Max in Las Vegas when I started and have kept them touched up for a year now with a couple of fine natural stones.

Good luck. The first two weeks are the hardest and then it gets easier. The key is starting with a sharp razor and stropping properly.
