Thanked: 0Hello From GA
Hey guys!
First off, I want to say Thank you all for all the helpful information that everyone has offered through the forums.
After days of looking over the forums and other recommended sites by you guys, I decided to dive right in and get me a SR! but I still have a feeling I am missing something... this is a list of everything I go so far. I tried to go somewhat cheap since I am a poor college student haha..
Razor - Dovo Ebony "Bismarck", 6/8" Carbon Steel Straight Razor
Strop - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...01_i00_details
Brush, Mug, Soap, Stand - Amazon.com: Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury, Shave Set: Health & Personal Care
Shaving Cream - Essential Oil Shaving Cream - 6.8 oz. - Castle Forbes Collection
Everything is in the mail as of now..
Am I missing anything else?
Also I have a few Questions as well...
I have read about stropping, and I know I should strop Before and After each shave (I know spine and blade, no pressure and draw it spine first ), the question would be, should I be putting anything on the Strop in order to maintain the Blade better?
Would starting with a Uberlather(sp?) for a first shave a good idea?
What type of glycerin do I need? vegetable, USP? Is there a difference?
What is the best way to maintain my blade after a shave? do I put Mineral oil on it every time I finish shaving? Also, do I put it on the entire blade or just the Edge?
If I want to use this SR as a "Daily" what kind of honing stones is recommended? I know most people use the 8k, but would a 12k(I think I read somewhere about it) have a better Effect?
sorry for the long post! Its great to finally bring my head out of my shell (and hopefully not cut it off haha) and say hi.
Thank you
-Prince

Welcome. Only other thing required is patience. And maybe a steptic pencil.
I dont have a moisture issue and use my razor daily and do not keep it in the bathroom. But for storage I use a 3 in 1 oil. But it is recomended to use it daily and yes the entire blade. Most just use a tissue to do this.
What part of Georgia do you live, We are getting a pretty good contingent here.

For my strop I just wipe the natural oil off my balding head and apply it to the strop as often as I remember it.

I am down in Tucker - DeKalb county. Just around the corner. It looks like you got a good setup. As for using your Dovo everyday, I think that's ok. Didn't folks in the 40's use one everyday?
Don't fret about honing/stones just yet. There's going to be a big meetup shortly, and you can get all the info you need there. I've been here a short while and you will find most folks here are top notch, generous, and informative.

Welcome I'm from Cobb county also. I just put some mineral oil or WD40 on a tissue and wipe the blade. The VDH soap and cream you're getting is pretty good stuff don't think you'll need a Uberlather. I'd use one or the other. But it's your shave. Definitely strop, good links to videos within SRP. Watch them, learn to do it right and enjoy your shave.
You should try and make it to the SE Meetup.

Don,
Welcome to SRP. Glad to have you aboard.
Your setup looks good to me. I am uncertain about using 3-in-1 Oil or WD40 to lubricate your blade. I use Camellia oil. Others here use mineral oil. Both have a heavier viscosity.
I also use Tuff-Glide occasionally to lubricate the pivot pin on my razor."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Don,
As a followup to your specific questions:
Q: Would starting with a Uberlather(sp?) for a first shave a good idea?
A: Its a good idea, but you don't need to do so. Just focus on creating a good lather from your VDH shaving soap and/or Castle Forbes Shaving cream initially. IMHO if you just use the CF for your first shave, you won't need to uberlather.
Q: What type of glycerin do I need? vegetable, USP? Is there a difference?
A: The kind of glycerin you get at the local drugstore will do just fine. Explain to the druggist that you want it for shaving. Otherwise he/she will think you are trying to make explosives.
Q: What is the best way to maintain my blade after a shave? do I put Mineral oil on it every time I finish shaving? Also, do I put it on the entire blade or just the Edge?
A: I've already answered mot of this question. I would apply the oil to the entire blade--after you strop it 15X on the fabric and 15x on the leather to facilitate the drying process and remove any residual gunk from the blade edge.
Q: If I want to use this SR as a "Daily" what kind of honing stones is recommended? I know most people use the 8k, but would a 12k(I think I read somewhere about it) have a better Effect?
A: I wouldn't purchase a hone at this point. Focus on your shaving technique. For blade sharpness maintenance, get a balsa strop and some Chromium Oxide paste. Apply the CroOx to the balsa strop. That will help you maintain the sharpness of the blade. Later, if you want to get a Norton 4k/8k for serious honing, that will be okay. You shouldn't need to hone your razor again--if it is already professionally honed--for 6 to 12 months from now."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Remember...light touch for everything. Light touch on the strop...light touch shaving. Good luck.
Oh! Get an alum block! Major plus after shaving.
