Talking New to straight razor, so excited about this site!

    Hello everybody,
I am nicolas , french (Hence the alias...) and brand new to straight razors. I just bought a couple on ebay that were cheap, scales looked decent ( to be honest, I have intention to make new scales...), heavy tarnish/pitting but overall looked good. My intention is to restore them, just because of the process, and the fact that century old items are there for uis to take care of them... My favorite cream so far is Taylor of old bonds avocado. I also like the French soap (chavinistic, I know) pre de provence, provence sante verlaine, and would LOVE to try martin de candre.

My budget is super limited, so I'll learn by sanding by hand, and either save to by waterstone, or have them honed professionaly.. Any idea how much that costs?

Anyhow, really excited abut this, and feel free to give my any criticism/advice, or just hang out. These communities are awesome.

Welcome to SRP Nicolas and welcome to straight razors! There is a complete education on the forum to answer your questions. Check the Library link for lots of possibilities. For your first razors
you probably want to send them out to be honed when you are done working on them. It is important because when your razor comes back to you it will let you experience how great a properly honed razor shaves and feels against your skin so you will have a benchmark goal if you decide to begin honing your own razors. Feel free to ask any questions as there a lots of helpful folks here.

Wow, that was a fast response! Thanks so much! Do you or anyone else know a place to get the razors honed? Thanks.
I'll look at the library now!

    Nicolas,

Your safest bet would be to look at the classified section and see who is offering honing services. You could send your razors to someone who is known to be proficient.
