That is a Dean Razor (hence i thought it was appropriate). It's not a bad bass, it's a neck though with a brass nut so it has great sustain even though it is rather light. Mine has EMG pickups and 4 band EMG EQ/Volume controls. It's my jazz bass. I play for a big band and a jazz combo.
What kind of music do you play?

I have played all kinds of stuff in the past, on somewhat of a hiatus right now. But I've played in; Alternative, Punk, Jazz, Funk, Jam, Rap Bands and just about everything in between. What about you?
I used to have a US Spector with the EMGs Haz Lab pre with a brass nut as well, great set up. Have a Dean acoustic/elec that I dink around on some, they do make good stuff, I like the quilt top on yours too. My main axes are a Ritter Classic, and a custom Stambaugh Flying V bass both of which I need to pick up more than I do
What kind of vintage SR did you pick up? And how do you like it?

I play mostly jazz and funk but I have played in pop/rock and jam bands in the past.
My razor is in the mail. It is a mastershake with a sheffield blade (round tip). There is a pic of it on SRP from a previous owner that i found but i can't seem to locate it right now. I may have to send it to Lynn to get a good hone before i use it. I will have to just wait and see.
Found it! It's the 4th picture down: http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...razor-set.htmlLast edited by Grover09; 03-15-2012 at 02:52 PM. Reason: Found pic

Thanked: 3I only used a spike point when I started I found that I preferred it. Yes you will probably cut yourself with a spike point but you will also cut yourself with a round point. I am by no means an expert but this is just from my own experience.
Enjoy,

This is what I went with. It doesn't look like a full square or spike point, but it's not as round as many of the DOVO's are. They seem to have a few with this tip, maybe someone can clarify. I hope to get a few more vintage blades with a true spike to play with, but I think this one will work well to begin with, and hopefully stick around for a while. I like the rounded off scales, and I've always been a fan of cocobolo.
Grover - Very cool. I have seen some of mastershakes other creations. Truly some talented and informative people on this forum, glad I found it. Funk/Jazz is where it is at too. I have a lot more fun playing stuff like that. Lets the bass get more interactive and groove in. I can't seem to let that go and sometimes piss other band members off when playing other types of music. Been wanting to get another project going, but it just takes so much damn time!

That is a beautiful razor. I think I will get one eventually.
Time can be a huge issue. The key to playing funky bass in a pop band is to play with more novice players that have a lot of respect for you. Then you can funk up some pop tunes and even solo out on the bass! You should definitely get back into it! Maybe play some bars and make some $$$ to finance a couple of new razors!!!

Yes, but then you have to play with people that suck a bit lol. Which actually was kinda my last gig, but they made it to one show and then wussed out. The trick is finding people that can play that aren't a$$holes or just crazy.. or on drugs. There are all kinds of issues with musicians. The biggest being that 90% of them think they are going to make it big and move to LA yadda yadda. I have no desire to live like a nomad or deal with d-bags, but I have a sickeness that makes me feel a need to get on stage and bust out some tunes every once in a while. I'm sure I'll crank up the craigslist band search here before too long, but even with that it usually takes about 15 auditions to find the right fit, and then who knows how long that lasts. If I did get back into and get some cash.. that would probably go back into more basses lol.
Mainly because the coco makes me think of this... and I actually decided years ago the next bass I had made would be a coco top... so I might not even be able to use this razor depending on how it affects my GAS...

Yes pretty, but it would cost more than most new cars lol. Alembics are awesome, but what they want for their nicer basses is rediculous.
What do you have now/what are you looking for?
I've always wanted a Aguilar DB 750 and also an old tubey Mesa 400+ head

The Mesa-boogies are always fantastic!
Right now i just have a TNT 115 from Peavey. It's blown. I have been using a friends Hartke 210 for about 8 months.
Well I would like to have a Hartke LH1000 with a Hydrive 410 but that is way out of my pricerange. However, as a 2nd job i work for the uh "GeekGroup" at um goodbuy so i get discounts from some of the vendors that sell through um goodbuy including Line 6. Also the best sound that I ever had was out of a Line 6 cabnet and head in college. So I'm looking at purchasing the Lowdown HD400 with the Lowdown 410. But I feel that my music should pay for itself so i need to play out more with my combo band to get the cash.
