Thanked: 33Noob from NC with RAD, bad! And a question.
Ok... I think I have calmed down a bit, but is this normal? I have been scouring ebay, thrift stores/antique shops, and selling other stuff that I don't "need," on CL to support this "affliction." I started with a Dovo that a good friend (Moosiker) sold to me, and now have like 12 straights and 8 of them are shave ready razors... 3 Simmons Hardware (a Barber's Pet, and a Keen Kutter Royal, and one without a tm name), One Robeson 300, a Gebruder Christians (Solingen), etc... So far my favorite shaver is the Simmons Barbers pet, although the Robeson is pretty awesome too.
On top of that I bought a 7 safety razor lot and cleaned them up. Is it wrong of me to absolutely love shaving? I have been getting up 45 minutes to an hour earlier every morning just so I can take my time shaving. I have totally taken over the guest bathroom with my "stuff."
Right now, since I am working on my technique, I am starting the shave WTG twice with my Straight, then finishing up with the DE. I am getting a consistent DFS, but there are always just a couple places on the neck where my hair is impossible to map that I just can't get BBS.
So on to the other question:
What do I do in the places where the direction changes several times? I have two spots on the side of my jawline on the right side that the direction changes more than once. When I shave down the cheek then down the neck, it is actually going XTG. How do I get that part smooth?Last edited by Yochatman; 04-03-2012 at 01:21 PM.

I can't comment if this is normal, as I have just received one, and have 4 more razors from eBay on the way. I already had 8...
Welcome to SRP.
First off, try to achieve a comfortable shave. Don't worry about a BBS shave. Just enjoy the shave and the razor.
That being said, I know you still want BBS so I'll let someone else comment.

Normal? possibly not, but I started acquiring not too long ago and i am up to my six vintage razors. im saving the seventh place in the seven day set that i want for a brand new Dovo Astra. I too have spent countless hours pouring over the bay, and it wasnt until i looked at my credit card bill
( )that i stopped haha. as for my advice with the trouble spot on your neck, I agree with Cove 5440, but I will also say for you to try and experiment (slowly) with different directions of approach and different angles. Just be sure not to over due your passes on any one spot, you could agrevate your skin something fierce if you arnt careful(I wasnt!)for instance, the hair on my neck grows from right to left arcing a bit upward to my left ear so the tyipical 'up down' strokes are not sufficient enough to get BBS, and a straight razor is rather difficult to directly drag across the neck. So instead I make a series of short XTG strokes in multiple directions depending on the part of my neck, to achieve as much ATG as I can, result for me is what i think is as close to BBS as i can make it.

You have lots of company.
I've bought about a dozen razors in various states of repair from old junkers to NOS.
I've restored, honed, and sold two so far. Rescaled one.
Bought hones from 220 through 12k.
CLEANED UP THE BATHROOM and turned it into a shave den.
Started making custom shave brushes.
Bought a nice scuttle.
I'm about to build a razor rack to keep them away from the sink splashes.
Preached straight razor shaving until people are sick of me and I've only been in it 5 months.

So I have 2 EBay razors on my way from this past weekend (Thistle and a Kinsfolk), and 2 others coming back from honing. I'd say you're about as normal as any of us fine freaks here.

Normal, don`t know... ask Lynn... I think there was time he had 1500 razors in collection. I know guy, who knows the guy who has 5000 straight razors. BTW he never used one to shave... just a collector...
My self to myself.... It is normal:-) I like shaving with straight razor too. I don`t know how many I have... 50, maybe more....

No, it is not normal, except around here where it is common, Normal and somewhat expected.
Started out with 1 razor, grew that to 30 over 4-5 months. Then reduced everything to 1 razor. I had convinced myself that more than 1 was not needed and was excessive. I now have 2 razors. Oh and 6 on the way.... I think it started again
Hello, My Name is Derrick and I have a problem....
