    Default newbie in Sylvan Lake

    Hi all,

Looking to get started, and looking for a recommendation for places to shop in Alberta....have never seen one for sale in this province to my knowledge.

I live in upstate New York. A lot that you'll read on these sites will be completely foreign to the area and time that we live in. It's all most like we're living in a Shaving Third World.
I find that you'll need to relay on the 'generosity of strangers' for the knowledge that you'll want to learn.
.... And be very careful with the Internet eBay like sales! Remember there were millions of each of these razors made. Learn and don't over pay, or collect things you won't need.

Where is Fendrihan? That's a reliable Canadian mail-order source, and it should have a physical home _somewhere_.

Fendrihan - Classic Wet-Shaving, Quality Leather Goods and Gifts For Men

The Italian Barber is also Canadian, but is based in Richmond, Hill, Ontario:

Almost all the US razor dealers will ship to US addresses. You may get stuck with Canadian customs duty, and that might bring your "delivered to the door" prices up to Fendrihan's level.

You may have to get used to buying stuff mail-order, rather than shopping in person.

Thanks Charles. Is there a place on the forum to get advice on what to purchase for a beginner? I can do mail order, but if I don't know what to buy.....

Thanks for the information. You have given me some good steering there. As for the cost, at $200-350/tire for my 4x4 hobby (jeeps), this will be within the budget.
I'll check the links,as the only purchase so far is a razor. From the feedback, it appears that this member is a very good seller to deal with, and I kind of like the vintage stuff:

Cheap enough, and should get me started fine.

So are you saying that it means the same thing, or that Fendrihan's are not shave ready? Thanks.

As far as I know, Fendrihan's razors are all shave ready......I think Phil from Classic Edge does them.....

    Maxi --

I was going through the Fendrihan website. Some razors were "factory" edge (with a warning), and others were "pre-sharpened".

For an example of "factory edge":

PS (to the original poster) -- Maxi is one of our Eastern Canadian honemeisters. Might be a good person to keep in mind if you run into trouble.

    Charles,

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't know that "some were" and "some weren't" on Fendrihan. Good to know.

    Welcome to SRP, dunl.

You've got some sound advice so far. Alberta is pretty dry as far as shaving supplies go, especially Edmonton. I heard a couple members had some great luck recently in Lethbridge, though I suspect the two of them have cleaned out that antique store by now. Funny enough the only local find I've run across was at an outdoor flea market at Pigeon Lake, not far from either of us. Outside of online sales, flea markets and antique store are probably your best bet. Happy hunting.
