So it looks like the common idea is that 8K isn't quite fine enough to finish on, even for a beginner... I should be looking at 12k or 16k synthetics. Obviously like anything brand is personal choice.

At this stage, Luke, drop around to my place and you can try some of the hones I have so that you can get the idea of how they work without having to spend anything.
The 8K is OK to finish on IMHO
I've got a Norton 4/8, coticle, PHIG, Thuringian, Welsh Slate set etc.
Hope this helps.

Hi Luke, take up Geoff's offer to show you his hones. I visited him a few days ago and learned heaps. Like you, I am starting out on the slippery road of honing. HAD for short, ha ha
Have a good one mate.

That's not true. You could shave off an 8k honed by an experienced guy & it would be better than an edge off 12k or 16k from a newb honer & I mean heaps better.
Of course an experienced guy could improve the 8k edge further but you get my drift ? It's partially about the stones but the hands are VIP.“The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.”

G'day Mcduck and welcome to the SRP Aussie community
I would strongly suggest you take Geoff up on his offer
I have had some great times with him and learned heaps about razors and honing
He is one of the many great guys here on SRP
I don't know much about honing yet, but I learn something each time I have a go
I also live in Ipswich area, so feel free to drop me a pm
Great to hear about your success with the Straight Razor
Strap yourself in and enjoy the ride
