Thanked: 1Hi from Oz
Hi Everyone,
I'm a mumma of two sweet monkeys and finishing off a degree. I found out about this site from a girlfriend who loves shaving with straights and thought I'd say hi and look into getting one for myself.
I love the look of them and especially love the idea of saving precious time not having to do 4 strokes to shave the one spot...but I'm really worried about having a razor in the same house as a 4 and 2 year old... Are there any other mum's on here that shave with straights and what do you do to make sure the little ones never get hold of it? My husband's a carpenter so I'm thinking of asking him to build a little shelf or box in the shower, would that work?
Anyway, nice to 'meet' you all in advance!!
Hannah.

Welcome sheila! Sorry couldn't help myself You don't want to store the razor in the bathroom at all if possible. Since you won't be throwing it away every few weeks it will sit and begin to rust in the humidity. So, best advice is get your husband to make a box or case for it and keep it in your dresser or somewhere in your room where you can strop it and keep the rug rats away. Honestly, though, I would introduce them to it teach them about it, and that it's not a toy...heck show them what you use it for. Never too early to teach them how to keep a tradition alive and spare them from the disposables!
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Hannah, best of greetings. Especially with the learning curve, you may find it takes longer to shave at first. I'd have to defer to the fine ladies here on SRP as to how the time required compares to other methods. Tiddle is quite right about keeping a razor out of humid environments - preferably keep it coated w/ oil between shaves.
Being down under, you have some great people that could help you with finding razors or with keeping them sharp and smooth. I hope Onimaru55 pops in to this thread - he's somewhat of a star on the subject. For help getting started, SRP has a forum for ladies only that would be the place for asking about specific techniques or shaving issues.
Ladies Corner
.
For questions about the razors themselves, the other forums would gladly help. The attitudes are really good and you'll find people here really want to help you enjoy the learning and help you get wonderful shaves.
After a year of using a str8 razor myself, my lovely bride asked me to shave her legs for her. I was pretty nervous (they're rather precious to me) but it went well. I took almost 50 min. to do 'cause I was being so careful. When done, she kept rubbing her leg and saying: 'that's amazing'. Its an attribute of a good str8 razor shave to last a long time, so you may find you have to shave less frequently.
I hope your time here, the learning, and the people you encounter help you have alot of fun with it.

G'Day Hannah and welcome to SRP.
Glad to see another Aussie on board.
This might give you some ideas for keeping sharp things away from little hands

You could start with a disposable straight. Lord makes a plastic single use model that comes in bubble wrap package, and a small blade guard that has to be removed in order to access the blade. They are available on the Bay for a little over a buck each. Might be a good fix until you come up with a good storage option for a real SR.
Anyway, WELCOME to the forum. Come back often, read and share . . .Any day on this side of the flowers is a good day!

Thanked: 1Thanks for the warm welcome!!
Tiddle, I'm lol'ing at sheila! That's a great idea to introduce the babes to it. I will definitely store it out-of-reach but I'm all for letting my kids understand first-hand how things work so I think introducing them to it is really wise.
Pink lather, you are so brave shaving your lovers legs!! I've let hubby shave mine once or twice with a "safety" razor and THAT made me nervous
Haveachat45, those display cases are GORGEOUS!! Might need to commission hubby to make one of those
Eekspa, I asked my husband a little while ago to make one for me as he makes knives, so he's researching doing that at the moment. That's a good idea though, I might purchase one to try out while I wait...goodness knows how long it will be till it's finished!!
Thanks again for the welcome. Might check out the ladies spot, does it come with free chocolate?!

Thanked: 1072Hey Hannah and welcome to SRP.
I have a 7, 5 and 2 year old in my house so I need to be vary careful how I store my razors.
I keep them in this case, which is out of reach (for the two littlest guys anyway).
After I shave I leave the razor out to dry before putting it back in the case. I have a spot on the top shelf in my cupboard where I leave them for a few hours.
As well as all that the kids know never to touch the razors, a shave-ready razor is rediculously sharp.
Anyway I reckon have a look around, come up with something you like & get the hubby to knock up a case for you.
I think you'll both have a lot of fun with straight razors.
Nice to see a girl around here too.

Thanked: 1587Hello and welcome to SRP
I'd store the razors away from the bathroom. I use a cash lock box for some of mine. A cheap and safe, though not particularly pretty, solution.

Hi from Oz
Welcome to SRP Hannah. It's nice to have you here.
I have two little ones and I store my razors on a high shelf in another room just to be sure.
