Thanked: 0Hello From Nashville
Hello all,
I have been wanting to learn to shave with a straight razor but did not know how to learn, as I do not know anyone who shaves with one. Now that I've found this site, it looks like I'll have plenty of information and support to learn. I especially want to learn now before my son gets to shaving age so I can teach him how.

Welcome to SRP Jim. The brotherhood you've joined will be here to answer any questions you or your son may have in the future. Read the Beginner's section if you have not done so already and realize the learning curve involved with shaving with a straight razor may be a couple of weeks or a couple of months, which ever it is, take a deep breath and enjoy the ride, it pays off in the end. I too look forward to the day I can teach my son to shave like a gentleman and not some mindless automation with some 5-6 bladed, vibrating piece of crap. Post any questions you have and enjoy.

Thanked: 0Thank y'all for the warm welcome. I couldn't wait to get started, so I bid on a W. Bingham Co. 5/8 inch razor on E-Bay today. I know I should be leary about E-bay, but according to the item's description, it is shave ready and was professionally honed and sharpened by Lynn Abrams. Hope the seller is being truthful and that I didn't get taken. Even if it's not ready, though, I got it cheap enough to pay someone to get it shave ready for me and still have a good deal. I just don't want to have to wait for that.
Anyone have any experience with razors from W. Bingham Co.?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi jstocks,
Welcome to SRP!! As before mentioned, you've come to the right place. There's a treasure trove of information here. I recommend reading extensively in the WIKI (library), which is currently off line, but should be back up shortly. You'll find a link in my signature line below. On the Bingham razor you'll find a number of posts by typing in Bingham in the search box at the top right of the page. Sounds like a very good razor, and if Lynn Abrams honed it, it's shave ready, providing the seller didn't compromise the edge.
Cudo's on wanting to pass this on to your son. I'm trying to pass it on, but to my grandsons.
The learning curve can be a bit tedious, but don't get discouraged, we have all faced the same challenges.
Also in my sig line are links to the SRP classifieds and vendors section. The classifieds are items for sale and services provided by our members, which are very reputable. You have to be an established member to post for sale items. The vendors section offers more complete restoration, honing, etc. services and is a good resource.
I think you'll find everything you'll need here, and all are willing to help.
If I can ever assist you in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me via PM (private messaging). Look forward to seeing you on the forums, and again, Welcome!!
Best Regards,
Howard.Last edited by SirStropalot; 11-07-2012 at 06:42 AM.

Welcome to SRP!!! I'm in Huntsville, Alabama, not too far from you. I'm hosting a "meet up" in the next couple of months, you should come down and visit. There's a great group of guys in the area. I also carry a number of shaving products, soaps, brushes, scuttles/mugs in my office (I'm a plastic surgeon) so we can "set you up" if you need any help. You'll find that this a great place to learn. Enjoy the journey.
