Thanked: 2The New Project
I am in the US Army on a deployment to Afghanistan. Every deployment I try to pick up something new. Last one was cigars now straight razors. I'm on a budget and will probably pick things up piece meal until I have everything I need. My only worry is being able to keep the blade sharp without being near someone that can hone it for me. I will get all the things necessary to keep a shave ready blade, but not confident in my ability to not mess up the blade. I would appreciate any advice to my special situation. I haven't purchased anything yet. I can across the site researching products and instructions on the whole process. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Aloha and Welcome to SRP brother! You have come to the right place for help starting Straight shaving. I started only two months ago and have shaved everyday so far, getting better each day. Do read the Library/Wiki here on SRP there is a lot of good information there, also watch videos on you tube or the ones posted here. I don't know how good your internet is when I was there only a few who bought into satellite systems had internet in their tents.
As far as being on a budget and getting your gear you should check out the sites that advertise here, and this sites classifieds section. I have not purchased from Larry at whippeddog.com but many here have, his sight unseen deal will get you a good shaving razor at a reasonable price.
Let us know your questions, and the search box in the upper right is your friend.
Stay as safe as you can over there!Aloha,
ED

Thanked: 2209Welcome to SRP
The advice given above is very good.
For a razor look at the SRP Classified ads. Make sure the razor is honed and shave tested. Next get a plain leather hanging strop. You will use this before each & every shave for 30-50 roundtrip laps. To keep the edge sharp you have a lot of choices but the simplest is to obtain a Barber hone. Good, quality, reliable names are Swaty or Apart. There are many others also. The Frictionite 00 is simply to expensive to start with. The other option is an abrasive pasted paddle strop.
Hope this helpsRandolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
