Thread: Hello

I am completely new to straight razor shaving. My family has a straight razor that was brought with them over from England and I sent it off to GemStar Customs to have it restored, so thought I would do some research on it.
Also this family straight razor piqued my interest enough that I bought another on Ebay and it dawned on me that it may have not been the best of purchases as I know NOTHING about straight razors and dropped $425 on one just because I liked the way it looked. So I guess I'm also here to find out if it is an okay razor, or if it has too much "hone wear" or something else wrong with it.

I have a really thick coarse beard that I grow out for 3 weeks and shave off when it gets too itchy, and thought straight razors may do the trick as Mach 3 razors seem to be useless after just one shave.

Welcome to SRP! It's always hard to tell for sure from pictures, but I can say that Wade & Butcher For Barbers Use razors are amongst the most coveted vintage blades out there. Is it worth what you paid for it? Only you can answer that. However my FBU is hands-down my best shaver and I suspect you'll like yours.

What kind of razor is the one you sent to Glen? We all love to see pics - especially ones with special family connections - so when you get it back, please post some.

The family razor is a no name I think because I have never seen any on here, but because it came with our family on the boat over I thought it should be put back regardless of if it's worth or not because I wouldn't sell it.
It's a D. Miller and Son Eldonworks with a broom that is 7/8 inch wide


With regards to the spontaneous purchase of the Wade & Butcher, yes I liked it a lot as soon as I saw it so I guess you are right that it is worth it to me. I was just worried that it had too much wear or something and would be a waste of money I should have put into a better one later or something?

I haven't heard of D. Miller before, but I'm far from an expert. Perhaps one of the truly knowledgeable guys will chime in here. If not, your best bet would likely be to PM the details and a pic to Manah as he seems to know more about such things than is reasonable for any one human being to know.
