Default Getting started in Houston, TX

    Hello all,
I've been struggling with razor burn on my jaw line and neck and have tried everything pre- and post-shave and with different cartridge razors to try and combat the razor burn. Nothing has worked, so I think it's time I give a straight razor shave a shot. I've had one straight shave in my life at a barber shop and it was the best shave I've ever had. Unfortunately, my face broke out really badly the next day. I think I'll take it slow with the straight shave and obviously not do my whole face the first time through.

Anyway, I have cream (art of shaving unscented) and a brush from them, but am looking for some more advice on a good starter razor (preferably <$50). I read the FAQ and beginner advice on this website, but would still love some recommendations on people's favorite starter razors.

Also, what does the width of the blade have to do with shave feel? What to people prefer?

    Thanks!

I would suggest perusing the Classifieds for a blade under $50. There are a few good shavers there. Good luck!

As to blade width, I would suggest a 6/8 blade as middle of the road and a good place to start. For me, that is ideal size tho I have some razors that are a bit larger.

I always had razor burn with cartridges, bad burn, always. Ingrown hairs on my neck too. The straight was the answer for me, besides that, it's fun.

Look in the classifieds here for a good starter razor, with a little looking you should be able to find a good razor at a good value.

The width of the blade doesn't really have to do with the feel of the shave all that much. Wider blades are heavier, but not much else that I can think of off the top of my head. In my opinion, wider blades are easier to strop with, and they definitely hold more lather on them before wiping or rinsing off. More than anything though, the blade width is just a matter of preference. Some people like the way the big blades look more than they like the way the small ones look. I like them both just fine, some guys have preferences one way or the other.

As far as your face breaking out after your barber shave. I occasionally get that in a couple of areas when I've gone over an area too many times and gotten "too" close. It's not frequent however. It pretty much only happens when I am chasing an absolutely flawless all over bbs shave and no other time.

I grew up around Surfside, about an hour from you btw. I still miss the salt water. And the Astros.
