Thanked: 0Hello from Cambridge
Hello, I'm Andrew, and I live in Cambridge, MA. In January I bought a Dovo and a linnen/leather strop as part of a New Year's resolution to learn how to shave with a straight and spent three months getting somewhat poor shaves and giving myself razor burn trying to BBS with a straight. I picked up a shavette on Friday, and realized the problem wasn't technique but having a razor that wasn't sharp enough since the shavette got me BBS with no pressure, and no burn. This time I'm going to send the straight to a honemeister instead of the local cuttlery shop to sharpen, so my straight can do for me what my shavette accomplishes.

Welcome to SRP Andrew. Sorry to here you got off to a bad start but you're in the right place. Neil Miller here or at the Strop Shop might be worth a look since you are UK based.

Welcome, Andrew.
As mentioned, its best sending the SR out for some good honing. Sharpening knives and SRs is a similar process, but not the same.
I also used with a shavette before switching to a SR. The switch was well worth it.
Enjoy the shaves. You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

We are glad to have you here Andrew, welcome. Neil Miller could be the perfect candidate for having your razor honed. Once back in your hads you will have a perfectly honed straight razor that will give you a benchmark feel for a perfect shaving edge. It will be worth whatever Neil charges for honing and postage. Enjoy.

Hello, Andrew, and welcome to Straight Razor Place. As everyone has noted, please have your razor honed professionally for a good start. We'll be able to help you along, too. Try not to focus excessively on a BBS shave, because the straight razor has a long learning curve. Focus more on getting a comfortable shave as you hone your skill.
