Default Hello from the new guy

    Allow myself to introduce.....myself...

New guy here. I have been DE shaving for years but I am just now stepping up to straights. I have to say that so far it has been a great experience. I think that all my years on a DE has helped a lot because in the couple weeks that I have been at it I have only had a few nicks and no razor burn.
Just like my DEs I am liking my straights well aged. My DE of choice is a '62 Gillette Adjustable and so far my straight of choice is my 1890's Maher & Grosh Wiry Beard (with a W&B Special a close second). I see lots more antiques in my future! I will have a chopper!
Not only has the shaving part intrigued me but also the restoration and honing part as well. I am the kind of guy who wants to do it all myself so to take a rusty blade and bring it back to life is awesome. Now I am doing numbers in my head to see how I can make my own! LOL Yeah like I am a blacksmith...

Anyway, I am an active duty Air Force guy. I have been in Florida for a long time and I am about to leave for a year in Korea. Hopefully I can restore some blades while I am there.

First off thanks for your service!
I know what you mean - love the maintenance part. Just honed a couple is times but it definitely gives the satisfaction.

Thanks. It is funny, I will go out and buy tools to fix my truck and pay as much as the repair would just so I can do it myself. Kinda crazy right?

    Hey pavespawn,

Seen you on the forum some, but welcome to SRP, a little belated. Getting into resto's can be a lot of fun, but a lot of work too. Just in case you haven't happened onto this thread, it's got lots of good tips and info on resto!!

Been to Niceville a few times. My daughter just retired from USAF as a MSgt at McConnell in Kansas. She was stationed at Hurlburt Field and a crew chief on the gun ships there. They lived in Crestview. Used to love visiting them and going to Destin for oysters and drinks at AJ's and crawfish at several other places. Seems all the Military thinks its terrible down there, but we sure enjoyed the visits. Well, sorry for the mini bio, but glad to have you on the forum. If you ever get stationed at Tinker in OKC, or Vance or Altus here in Okla., get in touch.

    in Korea!!!

    Regards,

    Howard

I was stationed at Hurlburt from 1999 to 2006. I was a Flight Engineer on Pave Low helicopters prior to commissioning. Those were the days! I am sad to be leaving this area. I love it here and plan on retiring here as soon as I can. When I was at Hurby I also lived in Crest-tucky! This area has a lot to offer and since my family is all up in Alabama it is perfectly located. The beaches don't hurt either.

Thanks for that link. I had missed it. I will try and build me some of those sanding blocks before I depart.

    Hey Gary,

Just wanted to say Congrats on your commission. Probably has been awhile, but I know that's a very demanding process to go through usually!

I too like the area around Crestview in general, but I'm on the downhill slide of my sixties headed to the seventies and that humidity down there is brutal. I wilted like a lettuce leaf at a picnic. Needed my air conditioner breaks!!

    Congratulations Again!!!

    Regards,

    Howard
