Loadthis, what hone did you purchase to use out here? Been finding used ones on ebay, but I am a bit leary of those. Any recommendations?

I bought the 220/1k, 4k/8k, lap stone norton set from SRD. No finisher yet except some .5 crox spray for the wool felt strop. Obviously this straight razor thing has taken hold! I also bought an ebay special W&B to learn to hone on and I think I've done pretty well.
I'm still trying to get an edge on the W&B, it's really warped and has a ton of spine wear. I did however put a really nice edge on my Ralf Aust and I'm pretty proud of my work.

Really good info on using the 4/8 norton here http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...2012-a-51.html

I think I'm too green to give a recommendation but I'm currently happy with the norton.

There's plenty posted about hones; however, I would work myself backwards as I needed them. I'd get a second pro-honed razor as your first one is getting dull and buy some CrO3 to use on the inside of the cloth portion of your strop for future refreshes, then send out your first razor for rehoning. This way you'll have a backup and one to always rehone or send out. When the CrO3 isn't working for touch-ups (and that should be a while), then I'd work backwards again and get a finisher. This should mean you won't get a finisher for a good long while and will have read a lot more, figured out what you want, used a bunch at meets, sent out razors to be honed on different stones to see what type of edge you like...etc. Hope this helps.

Oh I just found Lynn's videos on YouTube. Man, I wish I was back home to start this endeavor. LoL. Being deployed seems like the wrong place to learn how to hone.
Thanks again for all the tips!

Steelystan, I am with the 101st as well, 4th BCT. Fun times here so far, but retrograde is going to be a scary endevor. Just hope I have hot water to shave with towards the end of the rotation.
