Thread: Toothbrush for cleaning safety razor

I noticed that people use a toothbrush to clean a safety razor. I use it about twice a week after replacing my blade. How long will the toothbrush last? How do I know when to replace it?

When it starts tasting bad….

i don't think you need to scrub your safety razor more than once when you first buy it (only if you found it at an antique store). If you scrub it with any type of polishing compound, even toothpaste, you'll wear away the gold, silver, or whatever plating is still on it much faster.
so throw away the toothbrush and just rinse under hot water.

I use a child's toothbrush because the bristles are much softer than even the adult "soft" version. I use the child's brush after each change of a blade(usually 5 shaves) . I use the hand soap with the brush. I rotate my vintage DE razors, through this process. There appears to be no signs of wear.

Use a liquid soap and not toothpaste.

I rarely use a DE and just rinse/dry it good after removing the blade. Everyday use is a different matter.

If you douse the razor in a limescale remover first, your toothbrush will last for decades.

I'm not sure how long a toothbrush will last, but I have one still in use that has scrubbed the teeth of twenty something saws and maybe a hundred wood chisels in the past year when I stopped using it to brush my teeth.
I suspect if it was just used to scrub a safety razor, then it could last 5 or more years.
