Thank you - you may want to look at foam core - Euclid440 suggested it and I picked up a sheet from a craft store. It really allowed me to play with the design until I figured out the look I wanted. It's pretty cool stuff and could have easily been covered with material and used in the final product. I had some scrap maple laying around so I wanted to make use of that. Otherwise, I think I wold have just covered the foam core and called it a day. Would have given me a tight fit and I may do that for a travel box.

That is a sweet project, really turning out very nicely. Can not wait to see the final result after stain or oil which ever you go with. Great work.

Couple of coats of tung oil with some steel wool rub downs in between. Really makes the maple grains pop. The oak top doesn't look as off as I thought - just happen to have some scrap but it turned out to be fairly complimentary.
Still have a few razors that don't fit - might have to make 2 layers next time Substance!
Thanks for the feedback and good ideas!

Great looking box, nicely done. I think the different woods work well together. You have made something to be proud of.

Thanked: 146Beautiful job, but you may want to consider using closed cell foam if you are going to use foam, that way it won't absorb any moisture.

Thanked: 18I wanted to do something like this, but for me a box would be too bulky and I have no place to put it in my bathroom (wife has it cluttered with all her girl stuff). I have a chunk of leather I am considering to make a floppy carry. All of mine set in a glass jar in my tiny cabinet.

Thanked: 146I use old cigar boxes and line them with closed cell foam that I scavenged from some equipment packing at work.
It works out good for me. ..Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca
