It you're cutting towels you're not being careful enough. Not only could you cut towels, but you can also bugger up the edge on your razor. If you wrap the towel around the spine to wipe both sides, be sure to leave a bit of space between the towel and the spine. If it's too tight the edge will cut into the tower, especially if you have a smiling blade.

I stopped using towels after drying a blade on one that had a little grit on it. Scratched the crap out of my blad. I now use the toilet paper after rinsing in hot water. Just takes a couple squares and thus far has proven to be grit free.

The steel is sharp as ever and the towels are torn to pieces, steel is tougher than cloth. No problems except for the Wife and her hand towels!

    Yes. Thank you sir.
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

I wipe the lather off on my forearm.
When the shave is done I rinse the Razor user a scalding hot tap ,then light hand stropping followed by a quick wipe with the shave towel & finally finish with wiping blade & scales with toilet tissue.
So far my blades are thriving with this regime.

One micro-fiber towel in my little bathroom exclusively for drying my razor after I'm done.
