I've face lathered for years without any mugs or scuttles and then used a cup to keep the lather warm for many years and tried all kinds of routines to heat the cup and in the end found the scuttle to be simple and it worked very well. Of course if you don't care about warm lather (and by the way you can use a scuttle to keep lather ice cold too) then it doesn't matter.
I guess like all other shaving gear you don't need fancy razors or expensive soaps or a collection of high end hones. It a matter of spending our resources for maximum benefit which is different for us all.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Yes, those vintage scuttles are pretty cool but do nothing to keep the lather warm.
