Thanked: 20You can't go wrong with a pelican. Every piece of electronic equipment that travels with me, does so in a Pelican. The only exception is my iPod which is placed in an otterbox. I wish that Otter made a larger variation of cases, they are the only company that can hold a candle to Pelican.

ideas on razor case / box
Hi there,
I am definitely with you on this thread, it seems like it is difficult to find a box / case specifically for razors. While I can see there are many options for converting cigar, pen and glasses cases I am considering (I say considering so don't hold my word to it just now) making some boxes for razors so wanted to ask you guys what sort of things you wanted from a box / case to keep your razors. The pair travel case is pretty simple, I think the most important thing is to keep a pair of razors snug within the smallest possible volume for easy carrying, like the vintage ones at the beginning of the thread. I think teak with suede interiors (and possibly a brass clasp) would look nice.
For larger ones I was thinking a box for 7 that holds the razors in a tray that sits in a box so space for whatever underneath. Anything bigger I was thinking possibly three tiers. Anyways, I just wanted to post this to ask what you would want from a straight razor case / box. Some questions.
-Would you want another part (level, tier) for a brush, soap etc? (This would take up quite a lot of space in my opinion but could be an option)
-Is acrylic in the top like a display case necessary?
-Should the razors fit snug in between pieces of suede with the spine facing upwards? (If not how should they sit / lie)
I’d be really happy to hear any other thoughts, questions, suggestions. I really want to start by getting an idea what would be the best (and hopefully simplest) design. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, bradLast edited by ganboyi; 01-20-2010 at 09:42 AM.

I'm working on one right now , it's a single level cigar box about 1 1/2 inches
deep it should hold 10 razors easily , I have to make dividers and find some foam padding somewhere ..
for my everyday storage I use a craftsman wrench roll (canvas) I cut and sewed the bottom straight across it holds 13 razors can't beat it ...

This sounds like an interesting project. I really enjoy making boxes, but I've never made one for a razor. I only have one razor (for the moment), but it would be good to have a small travel-case for it.
Those of you looking for larger boxes; are you simply using the box for storage, or do you intend to travel with more than two razors? I think I would prefer to display my razors rather than put them in a box (however nice the box is).

Once traveling long distance to job site i packed some tools in a box with wet sharpening stones. The end result was awful depressing. So I would never keep a brush or soap, water stone in the same box with a razor.
Thinking about those original double cases....I have never found an eyeglass case that was long enough, except to fit a midget travel blade. The hinges are cool, but how could you rob one and remount it on a wood box?
Those have leather hinges I believe. Still a tricky proposition to get right the first time. The smallest SOSS hinge might work-still 1/2 inch thick material too thick for my tastes.... I thought on it but have not come up with the ultimate solution

Thanked: 275I just stopped into a Rockler store, and picked up one of their _many_ pen display cases for my razors. This one:
30 Pen Storage Case - Rockler Woodworking Tools
It has fairly wide depressions, and low dividers -- quite handy for straight razors. A _really long_ razor would be tight, but for my stuff it works fine.
You can't beat the price.

Thanked: 267I have only been happy with what I can personally make. I have had the TI stuff and although they are ok the quality is not top drawer in my opinion. I realize that to make a nice box would involve more work than is reflected in the price they are charging but the joinery in the boxes that I have had is atrocious.
Take Care,
Richard
