Thread: Scuttle replacement?

Now I'v never used a scuttle so this may not be exactly like using a scuttle, nevertheless keeps your lather nice and warm during your shave.

I tried this out yesterday and was plesently supprised.

I let the water run untill it was steaming and put my Old Spice shaving mug under the faucet and filled it completely with water and placed my brush inside to soak and filled the sink up to about half an inch lower than the rim of the mug. After my shower I dumped out the water and dried it off and put the soap in and lathered it up. Then placed the mug back into the water along with the brush while I dried off and got dessed and prepped for my shave. The lather being in the water kept the lather nice and warm through the shave. Now I'v never used a scuttle so I can't say its exaclty like it but it is really nice if you don't want to fork money over for a scuttle.

What I do is put the brush in the mug, put the mug under the sink faucet and turn on the hot water. I let this run while I shower; when I'm ready to build lather I dump the hot water and I'm good to go. I only do a single pass, so this works fine for me.

I started using an electric cup warmer. It works well enough to keep things warm at about 95 degrees F. I have to heat the mug up under hot water first to speed things along.

I just let the brush run under hot water for a minute or so then load with lather and wa la I have hot lather. Second pass? Just hit the brush with a little hot water and you have hot lather again. I have a georgetown scuttle but frankly hardly use it.

You could give the latest G5 a try,unless you're a confirmed 'face-latherer'.

From what you describe, you're doing just fine.

I face-lather. For my improvised scuttle, I fill a rotund coffee mug with hot water from the bathroom faucet, place a miniature glazed flower pot — filled with hot water and holding my brush to soak — half way down in the mug, and on to the shower.

Afterward, I refill the rotund coffee mug with hot water, but not the flower pot, face lather, occasionally nudging a corner of the brush under the faucet for a drop or two of hot water, and then have a great time shaving.

Do what works best for you. You can buy a scuttle, too, if you like, but if you prefer not to spend the money, create your own scuttle.

I've always used a homemade contraption for shaving. It consists of a very small non adjustable Potpourri crock pot,and a small SRD scuttle that looks like a flower pot. it fits very nicely in the crock pot. Like they were made for each other. I fill the crock half way with water and also use water to warm the insides of the scuttle....Once warm, I dump out the water and create lather...The crock pot plugs in and gives me hot lather throughout the shave. I've been using this for years. I recently broke down and bought a scuttle and Georgetown Pottery...here's a cut away view for those who really don't know how a scuttle works....
This is their G5 Scuttle, cut away view. it comes with a little rubber cork to keep the hot water, Hot! I thought this was an interesting pic.....

Ok zib, I tried this, finding a nice dip type crockpot from biglots for $5 and a great Asian type rice bowl (that I love, fits right in my hand and works great for lather) that fits perfectly in the crock. The only problem is that by the time I need to relather my face, my lather is all foamy and dry. I have to re-do the lather all over again. I only lather my face in sections because I still shave kinda slow. But is there a way to keep the lather thick and, especially, moist?

I do the uberlather thing with soap, glycerin and a bit of shave cream. I had to give up on the crock because it got so dry and now I float the bowl in warm water. But I miss that steaming hot lather!!!

Sorry Mate, You need to be proactive with the crock pot method, It will cook your lather...Read below, hope it helps....
My Crock Pot was originally intended for Potpourri, so it doesn't get REALLY HOT....Mine stays a litte bit above warm. It sounds like yours is getting way to hot. I hope you have water in the crock first...
Don't let it heat up while you shower, Rather, Fill it with Hot tap water after you shower, (Mine heats up rather quickly) Turn it on, build your later. Once your lather is built, do your prep. Pre shave oil, Hot towel, etc....Apply Lather...Unplug the Crock pot or turn it off once it gets up to temp. The residual heat should keep your lather warm, don't let it over heat. As I said, you need to be proactive with this method, but it will work. By the time I do second pass, Mine is unplugged....The hot ceramic, coupled with the Hot water will keep your lather hot. It's a Redneck Scuttle....I had that little crock lying around, it takes some tweaking, but it works good for me...Don't give up, Experiment with it a little and I think you'll be happy with the results....Here's a pic for you.
Also, You may want to try a Cup Warmer or Candle Warmer...or break down and buy a regular Scuttle like I did...The GTP G5
