New GPS G5 Scuttle
Even though I've been at this a while, Scuttles are new to me. I've had my own system which consists of a little potpourri crock pot and one of SRD's old style "flower pot" looking scuttles, basically, a double boiler... It's always worked very well for me, you just have to know when to unplug the crock, or it will cook your lather...Anway, I got this new G5 from Georgetown Pottery.
It's a beauty, and is designed to really build lather. I find it a bit small for my liking. The lather does come up over the edge quite easily.
I cannot get the lather to stay warm, is there some kind of trick. I fill it with hot water from the tap, I even put hot water in mixing area and let it sit, and I do have the cork in, but the lather doesn't seem to stay very warm at all, and it seemed not to hold the heat at all. Am I doing something wrong, or did I get a bum Scuttle....?
How about Boiling Water....? Has anyone done that, or should I just pre heat the thing by submerging it in hot water...?
Jeez, I waited forever to get this........Last edited by zib; 02-23-2010 at 04:32 AM.

I find that using boiling water in a scuttle causes the lather to break down. I'd avoid doing that if I were you.

i always fill mine right up with super hot water from the tap, then take a long shower and strop ya know, do all my shave prep, then right before i start making lather i empty my scutt, and refil with the hottest water my tap will put out, and my lather is always nice and warm, my scuttle was made for me by my friend you can check it out in the shave of the day forum, my lather dish has holes in it though, and if i could i would go back and change that, i hope that helps!

Thanked: 335zib,
Were it mine, here's how I would work the scuttle. Fill it with hot water from the tap, both inside the reservoir jacket and outside in the bowl. Then I'd take my shower and once out and toweled, I'd refill the scuttle as before, but this time I'd cork the reservoir, so that all the warm water stays there, and then I'd dump the contents of the lathering bowl/cup. Now with everything nice and warm I'd make my lather, suds up my face, and shave away. With the warm water in the jacket surrounding the lathering cup/bowl, everything should stay nice and warm for the duration of your shave.
good luck, good shaving

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it a go today, and see what happens. One day, my little crock method will no longer work, so I need to start finding a replaement system.....The GPS seemed less bulky than the German model with the two foot name....

I have the G5 and what I did was fill the scuttle inside and out with hot water to prewarm and then dump it all out and fill it with boiling water in the jacket and then you get hot lather for about 5 minutes or so. Unfortunately the G5 though beautiful holds too little water and the unit has walls too thick and thats the problem. I gave mine to my son who uses a DE and it perfect for a fast DE shave. I use the Oskar Scuttle which is perfect for the job. I find if you use a good milled soap the boiling water will not break down the lather. Glycerin type soaps will though.

Thanked: 39Nice looking scuddle.
Nib, I am new hear but have been around the block a time or 20. Yep road hard and put up wet one to many times.
Get inventive. I could see you getting another bowl shaped container that is an inch or two larger than your scuttle. Lay a piece of plastic wrap in it and mould it to the inside shape of the big bowl.
Now take you nice scuttle and tape the handle over so the handle is sealed tight. Now wet the scuttle and put plastic wrap over it letting the loose end hang in the opening.
Take a can of spray foam insulation and half fill the big bowl. gently push your scuddle down into the bowl but not to the bottom.
use the spray nozzle on the foam to fill in where you need it.
Don't cover the handle, you will need to seperate the 3 pieces after it is hard.
problem solved? keep the foam mold put up until you are ready to shave.
Put hot water in you scuttle and set it in the mold to preheat, after it pre heats dump the water out and refill the tank back up with burn you hot water whip up you lather and set it back on the mold to keep it hot.
Let us know how that works out?Last edited by Silver2; 02-24-2010 at 04:42 AM. Reason: mis spelling

I have a great little double boiler method that works great, it's a little crock pot and a larger glazded bowl from SRD. You fill both with hot water, plug in the crock pot, and let your brush sit in it. I start building lather, and it stays quite warm throughout the shave. I usually unplug the crock at second pass. I was just looking for a replacement, because that little crock pot won't last forever....and the G5 isn't cutting it. Either I got a bum scuttle or some guys are telling tall tales around here. Here' s a pic of what I've been using...It's not very pretty, but it works great....You just have to know when to unplug it.
