Thread: Traveling with a mug

My suggestion would be a shave-stick from Mama Bear. Just rub the soap on your face and face-lather. There is a tutorial on the website on how to use it. I love 'em.
Just my 2 bits.

The shave soap sticks are great for traveling - Harris makes a good product. I prefer to face-lather anyway. Pre de Provence soap is excellent and comes in a screw top container. Just some other options.

I don't do much traveling anymore but when I was in the Army I traveled with my mug and soap everywhere. Even took it to A-stan. I used (and still use) a plastic mug that I got from Tony Miller and Williams soap. I picked up a large toiletries bag (don't ask me where 'cause I don't remember) and everything fit just fine. Occassionally my cake would get knocked out of the mug in transit but that didn't really pose a problem.

I just choose a soap that comes in it's own container when I travel. On my last trip, I brought SRD's Blood Orange and just mix the lather right in the plastic can. It seems ready-made for travelling.

I take a boar brush and small tupperware container with a small puck of soap in it. I take my razor in a toothbrush holder tube. In a pinch I have used hotel soap in the palm of my hand with my brush. Marvey makes the standard rubber shaving mug that you see in barber shops Barber Poles and that would work too, but it would take up more room.

When we traveled to Scotland in January I wanted to travel as light as possible, so I just popped a puck of Williams into one ziplock bag and my spare boar brush in the other. The soap mug took up no extra space, cost me nothing, and never got lost, since it was attached to the end of my left arm. Inelegant, but it worked.

I make a soft shaving soap that's the consistency of putty or warm wax. That way I can press it into the shape of any container. I can tear off a small piece into the bottom of one of those shallow, slope-sided, two-inch scuttle bowls; or flatten the whole four-ounce cake into an Edwin Jagger apothecary-style mug. The soap itself rides in a 4 oz. souffle cup with a snap-on lid, so it can be kept safe from dust.

So for me when I travel I grab up whatever's available, such as an 8-oz. souffle cup that has lots of room for mixing foam in. Plop a bit of soft shaving soap in there and I'm good.

If I had to just take the 4-oz. cup with me, that would still work fine; I'd work a thick lather onto the tip of the brush, spread, then wet the brush for thinning and spreading out farther. The biggest question is which brush I'll be using; probably one of those stiff boar-brush ones with a short loft, where the bristles stand straight and don't flop around. Otherwise I'd worry the brush would get frazzled in transit.

I use VDH shave soap so...I just get a new puck and leave it in the plastic thingee when I'm travelling. Can get a bit messy but works in a pinch. When I return from travelling I just continue to use it as usual once I put it in the nug. Shut the top after you're finished and it works out. I actually had a shave bowl break while travelling and ceramic shards were a concern for a while. Hope this helps. Rich.

I carry a tube of shaving cream and usually use the cup or saucer you find in the hotel room. Either that or mix the lather on my hand.
