Dirty Bird Scuttle
I recently bought the larger Dirty Bird Scuttle. I have a GTP G5 and I'm not that impressed with heat retention. Also, the opening is only around 3 1/2 inches across, so it's a bit tight. The DB is larger 4 1/2. As far as heat retention, I don't suppose it'll be much better.
One thing I've been thinking about is the the G5 has a cork which is a great feature. Even though the heat retention sux, I imagine it would be worse with a hole allowing heat to escape. Since most scuttles I see remain open, Has anyone come up with a way to plug it up? I don't think my cork from the G5 will fit.
I'm thinking of using a piece of sponge or something to help hold in the heat in, or is it really not a problem....? Any Thoughts...?We have assumed control !

Thanked: 1936I'm not sure about what size you are needing to "plug", but you can go to most of your hardware stores (including big box stores like Home Depot) and find larger cork plugs. Trim to fit....

Thanked: 270Take a look at my scuttle reviews (done over the 4th of July weekend) http://straightrazorpalace.com/brush...-scuttles.html.
The Dirty Bird has double the reservoir capacity of the G5 and without the stopper has better heat retention.

Thank you for this thorough review of several of the most widely used scuttles on the market today.
I love my G4. It may not be among the best in retaining heat, but I love it just the same. For now, it does the job for me."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Hot Pot Express
Hi Rich,
Just curious...did you give the Hot Pot express idea a shot?...it has very good heat retention. I know at some point, you were looking in to it
I use mine everyday with very good results...of course, if you run the darn thing too hot, it'll cook your lather.
If you are set on the scuttle, then this will be a moot point

You know, I was there over the weekend, and I forgot. I have two little potpourri crocks, but they're not adjustable. As you said, if your not proactive, it'll cook your lather. I have to unplug it at some point. I've gotten away from the plug in deals, and more towards the scuttles...

Zib, i just got a beast of a scuttle from Roberts Ceramic Feats of Clay. this sucker holds over 4 cups of water and you can put a 35mm knot brush in it with room to spare,.I also have the g5 and it holds under 8 oz of water and i dont care for the g5 either. this scuttle is no looker by any means BUT it keeps the lather very warm, and its only 27.00. The P.O.S. plug made of ceramic that comes with it can be thrown out the window and put the plug from your g5 in it. Like i said this scuttle is all function and zero fashion.
