You can safely clean wood with Murphy's Oil Soap....
BTW, I'm jealoous, That's very cool.....Your wife's a keeper.....Do something nice for her....!We have assumed control !

I wouldn't worry about sterilizing it but if you still need to, rubbing alcohol on the interior would work and I don't think it'll affect the paint...
